Fish Trap or Hub Style Portable?

I’m in the market for a new portable that seats more than 2 people. I like Clam Corps different types but I can’t decide on which one to get. I’m trying to choose between the Denali IV and the Command Post Thermal. I like the room and light weight features of the command post but so many people have had problems with the hub design. Any recommendations?

There are certainly pros and cons to both styles but I have really liked the Eskimo hub style that I have. It is light enough to move easily and it fishes 2-3 people well. I have had some issues with the hubs but I have been able to repair them and get a few more years out of the thing. I also don’t have a truck so being able to put this in any vehicle was a big factor for me. I could fold the seats down in my Explorer to get a trap-style in but then I don’t have room for the kids or extra people. I do like the idea of the trap that has all the gear sort of self contained but between the cost difference and the vehicle space I’ll be buying another hub style.

    Good luck,
    Dave

Hubs are great if you have two people, but if its windy and you’re alone, they are a pain to set up.

I like the sled style. My Canvas Craft fits all my gear & I can just walk out & pull my gear. Rather then carrying anything.

My first shack was an eskimo hub I liked how easy it was to set up, the wind is a big factor. I know have an frabill and love it except for the wieght 110 lbs empty. Frabill have some new stuff on there web site you you should look at.

I’d look into the Otter Lodge or Resort. Thermal for this year too!

If you have a truck or a place to carry it go with the tub style and dont forget otter’s houses in that line. If your gonna be using a car go with the hub style. Its more compact and will fit in your car.

Space is not a problem. I’ve got a short bed Dodge Ram so anything I get can just sit in the back. Ultimately I’m looking for which style will survive the winter better and last the longest.

I switched from a flip style to a hub style last winter. If you fish alone and do a lot of walking to your spots, I recommend the hub. I was able to shave about 100# off of my load when I switched and I’m able to fish the same amount of people.

If you have wheeler or sled a flip style is probably better. Honestly I prefer the flip for ease of use but they are to heavy.

I’ve got the Frabill Outpost. I’m not sure about quality compared to Clam Corp and Eskimo. I would say about the same as Eskimo. I can say Frabill customer service is second to none. I would recommend Frabill any day.

I came from the Eskimo Pro Fish 350. In fact I’m going to be selling it this fall. No complaints on this unti at all either, except weight.
