Ice Trip

Last year I took two buddies to the pond in February. Rented a sleeper house and it was a lot of fun. However, fishing was rather poopy. I think we ended up with 2 fish in two days. I’d like to take them up again this year. What would you suggest for time of year? Is it best to get up there early ice or later in early March? I want to say it was like February 8th last year.

I’ve done really well in late December or early January.

As said above, the earlier the better. If the weather keeps up it will be a fairly early year for the resorts. I’d say on average, most resorts have houses available to rent by New Years.

Perfect. Thank you for the info. I forgot about that closing in March.

It’ll all be about the weather these next few weeks. I’ve had my skid house out as early as December 13th & as late as January 17th. Need good cold weather, little wind, little snow.

Last year we got our house out the weekend of January 11th and did really good for 3-4 weeks.

Personally I think it mainly depends on the weather leading up to the trip, I’ve had awesome trips all throughout the season. Early is best, but one of my best trips was the last weekend. Regardless of when you go, I’d recommend moving around during the day if you want to stay on the fish. Pretty rare to stay in your rental and catch fish all weekend.

Isn’t the key to moving regularly as needed all season long? I never understood why some people just park in one spot for weeks at a time. Think about it, how long would you sit in one spot in a boat without getting bit? 10 minutes?

My skid house sits on my honey hole all season long. Its a great spot from dusk till dawn, all season long. Why move if consistently catching fish? But, during the day we’ll go out and set up tip ups on deeper structure.

Yes if catching fish is the sole goal. Sometimes the weather doesn’t permit running and gunning, and honestly a lot of people don’t ice fish to try and catch as many fish as possible. For many people (and often myself) being out on the ice with friends and family is more important than the # of fish put topside.

That’s pretty much where I am at with it. Although, two fish in two days is a little on the slow side even if you have all seasons of Seinfeld to go through.

Where did you rent your house from last year? We are trying to find a good place to rent from.

    Thanks

Are you still deciding? I thought I saw in another thread you already booked a 10 person house. Appeldoorn’s?
