Ice Traction That Actually Works

    Hey all,

I got a pair of cleats I thought would work well and I was pretty disappointed, so looking for suggestions. The traction was amazing when not dealing with the other significant issues.

I open air run and gun so use them in cold temps while moving around all day. Working in snow and water while fishing would subsequently cause the cleats to get balls of ice built up on the main spikes. In general conditions they would sometimes pack up just with snow (not even water for ice). Both of these conditions would often pull the cleats off the boots as a well, rendering them not only useless, but also forcing me to hunt them down.
They were the style with a rubber band that went around the whole of the boot and a single strap on the toe. The boots I have are kenetrek mountain extreme. It’d be nice to find something with a strap that goes around the ankle of the boot and some sort of method for keeping them cleared out. Recently two of the metal links for them snapped too.

    Microspikes will fit the bill.
They don’t fill up with snow.

So microspikes appear to be essentially what I had, just a different brand. I linked them below. I wear an 11 boot so I bought the XL. That was in February last year and they broke. A couple weeks ago.

I don’t experience the issues you’ve had with the knockoffs, with my kahtools.

    Maybe there’s a slight difference ???

Get the Katoohla’s instead of generic. The XL fits pac-boots – you may want L if for an insulated hunting type boot.

3 years with microspikes and never an ice/slush/snow loading issue.I really don’t think that you can find better?

I have had that happen with my Kahoola Micro Spikes in slushy conditions. I jump up and down like a child throwing a temper tantrum and the packed snow comes off.

I think you can get rid of a bunch of your snow problems if you spray silicone on the bottom of your boots. Also good for keeping ice off guides, auger flites, and sled bottoms.

Ya these aren’t the same. MicroSpikes are indestructible unless you cut them with an auger blade or something. I have NEVER had a MicroSpike fall off.

I recently bought a pair of kathoolas and the knockoff. They look and perform the same but are not built the same. Kathoolas have a reinforced rubber where the looped chains are connected, knockoffs don’t. Imo, if you pick up one of the knockoffs just put them on the boot and leave them on. I have size 10 cabelas Saskatchewan pak boots and the XL fit no problem.
