Wondering what a good solution is to storing spoons for ice fishing. We only sled where we go, so they take a lot of bouncing. I’ve got mine in a small Plano box. The get super tangles, and they get pretty beaten up. I like the fly-style boxes for small jigs, but they don’t seem practical for spoons like VMC Tinglers and Rattling Spoons, and Northland Buckshots, etc.. Any suggestions?

Ice Spoon Storage Box?

I have a small Spoon case I got from Thorne Brothers that works awesome. When I get home tomorrow I will check the brand. You basically clip the hook in and it hangs down. And then a hard rubber strap holds them all in place in a row.
They don’t bounce around and get all chipped up, no hook tangles or anything. Very good case for spoons.
Maybe someone will know the brand (might even be thorne brothers brand).
December 8, 2016 at 8:05 am #1655440Clam Outdoors has a solution for you this year. Keeps all of your spoons separated, paint protected, and the hooks up so they can’t get rusty from any access moisture left in the box. I have been using this technique for spoon storage for like 4 years now by using foam from a craft store cut to fit a Plano box. I will credit the idea to Ice Force pro Brad Hawthorne though! Saw the great idea on his Youtube channel years ago.
December 8, 2016 at 8:29 am #1655453x2 to Matt’s suggestion. Been doing the same thing for awhile. I also separate and label each box. i.e. size, brand, color and style.
December 8, 2016 at 8:44 am #1655459Check this box out…I ordered one on Cyber Monday…no more “wads” of jigging raps to untangle…http://sportsmensdirect.com/shop/tackle-storage/sdi-spoon-box/ my spoons fit nicely in the foam and you can kick it around and they don’t move.
December 8, 2016 at 8:51 am #1655465I have a couple Plano boxes that I cut foam pipe insulation to fit into, then cut the insulation in two half-moons and have them stacked back to back together. I pierce a hook or two into the foam and lay the spoon down flat. The lid clamps everything in place. Nothing moves. I place some of my lesser used and overstock stuff on the bottom layer.
I’ve never had a single issue.
I’ll try to snap a picture or two tonight when I get home.
December 8, 2016 at 10:10 am #1655499Best idea ever! How many of you hate reaching into you tackle box and pulling out a rat's nest of crank baits to…

Here’s a link to what my spoon box looks like and how I store my lipless cranks and jigging raps with rubber bands tied around the trebles.
December 8, 2016 at 10:57 am #1655518No need to buy an expensive box to keep them in if you don’t want to. I use a regular plano compartment box and cut strips of carpet pad or soft foam to fit in the slots. The hooks stay in well. If you really want to protect them from bouncing you can add a second strip on top to sandwich but sometimes that is a hassle as hooks stick in to top layer then.

December 8, 2016 at 1:36 pm #1655578You might look up Meiho 85 Reversible on Amazon. Was in Japan and visited a few tackle shops. Purchased several of this box. Double sided with a plastic V insert that allows for 7 v shaped compartments on each side. Works great for ice spoons, inline spinners and small cranks. Prices in Japan were 600 Yen. Amazon wants $11.92.

I looked at the Clam spoon box today at Cabelas. The latches on the box are cheap. There was 3 boxes on display and 2 of them had broken latches.
Does anyone know where you can get softer foam like in the Clam box? I would just get the foam and buy my own Plano box with better latches.Nathan BayerlPosts: 69December 10, 2016 at 9:02 pm #1656189I bought some Plano 3600 box’s and bought some foam from the craft store and cut slot’s in that to put the spoon’s in.

SW EyesPosts: 211December 10, 2016 at 9:28 pm #1656201I happen to like 2-sided largest size of the Rapala jig box. It’s compact, I can fit more than enough spoons/raps in there (keep 1/2 dozen rattlin flyers, 1/2 dozen buckshots, 1/2 dozen tinglers, 1/2 dozen slender spoons, 3-4 UL Rippin Raps, 2 Rotating Power Minnows, plus a few other odds and ends,
Tungsten, etc….even a couple triggerX packs stuffed in).Less than $20. It says water tight. Everything stays seperate/untangled. It fits in my jacket pocket for hole hopping. I’ve never found myself wishing I had a bigger box, or more with me on the ice. I’m fact, I probably don’t even need that much.

I’m not sure of the model #, but I use the really thin Plano boxes with craft store foam glued into the bottom, with another strip glued onto the top of the box. I can pile the spoons up, and they don’t get hooked together. Protects the finishes and it’s easy to see the colors you have. I haven’t mastered the art of walking by a tackle display without throwing a few things in the basket, so this system works well for me.
December 10, 2016 at 11:29 pm #1656215Less than $14 for two boxes and padding, half hour art class. Going to work well. I saw Clam’s spoon/rap box, blew my mind how big it was, WHY?

December 11, 2016 at 9:35 am #1656256I think its really odd that none of the big companies have come out with a small design like Nathan’s. I made one with foam last season. The glue I used effed up the finish on my spoons. Arts and crafts aint my forte!
December 12, 2016 at 7:16 am #1656460If you DIY i’m not sure gluing the foam to the bottom is the best idea… I would cut it to fit tightly, but then be able to remove it if water gets in there for quick and easy drying.
December 12, 2016 at 7:37 pm #1656667I just picked up the NEW Rapala Jig Box and Utility Boxes
Fantastic for spoons !!
Hook up is awesome AND !!!
When the door closes the pad holds the spoons in place so they don’t bang around !!!Attachments:

This is what I did, I bought a bigger piece and was able to get 3 box’s out of one. I then cut them a little bigger to have a tighter fit. If a person was worried about the foam slipping out you could always put some heavy duty double stick tape down that they sell at the craft store as well.

I do the cheap plano and pool noodles. If you cut the pool noodle right it fits nice and snug in case and no need for adhesive. One section of it I used alot last year maybe needed to be replaced, it lasts.
Nice thing is I bet 95% of us guys with kids have at least one hanging around in the garage right now, and who’s gonna miss it for the time being?
Attempting to be more portable though, I see where those lil boxes come in handy.
