I’ve been thinking about making my own ice saw. Are they really as simple as cutting the shape out of sheet metal and sharpening, or to the teeth have to be at specific angles in order to cut? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

I have an ice saw. Called a fish toys ice saw. It’s definitely more then cutting the shape out of sheet metal and sharpening. The teeth are at a specific angle as well as the angle of the cutting edge.
Not saying you couldn’t give it a go. I’m also guessing the blades been hardened also.
My uncle retired after being a machinist for 35 years. He has his own little shop now in his garage. Has a plasma cutter and the whole nine yards. He tinkered with them a couple years ago, and had a tough time. It was all in the “kerf”, and the angle the teeth are bent out away from the shaft. He tried making his own spin on it but the best way was by copying the exact setup of the store bought model. And being unwilling to copy somebody else’s exact product he scrapped the whole idea. Knowing him though I bet it keeps him up some nights thinking about ways. I’ll ask him at thanksgiving.

^^^^^^agree^^^^^^
AND truth be known, by the time you figure in a modest amount for your time, it would be just as cheap to buy one. I have access to a complete machine shop. Not too much I can’t build. However, unless I can make it BETTER than store bought, I usually don’t make it. Rarely can one truly build a one-off at less cost. Now if I just wanted the challenge, then go for it.
this was quite a few years back, i already i had my saw but i talked to the people at reeds down at the ice show. they had ice saws, once they new i already had one they fessed up that the year before they had sold like 20 of them. 19 came back because they were junk.
that being said i havent heard much bad about any ice saws lately. i hear some guy in monticello sells and sharpens them. i just sent mine back to the fish toys guy and had mine resharpene after about 10-12 years of use.
I have a Nils that I got at Gander Mountain for like $35 during their closing sale. It will be my first year using a saw. Prior, I would just drill a bunch of holes in a rectangle and chisel it away. I have read many better reviews for Fish’s saws, but I couldn’t pass up the price.
