Ice Rod Case Suggestions

As I have started to accumulate more and more custom ice rods, it is probably time for me to invest in a better case. I currently have a Clam case that’s sort of a hybrid between hard and soft sided.

What’s the best rod case out there that holds valuable rods safely but also isn’t ungodly expensive? I have probably 15 or so ice combos, but only 5 or 6 that go with each outing and would need to be secured.

***I have seen that large Eagle Claw case that many suggest. It is a bit too long for my 1 man flip over shack at 43+” and hangs out of the sled. I don’t run ice rods longer than 32″ for the purpose of fishing in this shack quite a bit.

Scheels ice case isn’t too bad on the wallet.

It does hold some of my tackle too.

This is what I have. It is bulky, but well built and you can get everything in there which is what I like. You dont need to carry tackle storage since I can get all I need within the box. I just swap out plano trays if necessary.

Bucky, I have a Plano AW Tactical case. They can be found on Amazon for a bit over $90 right now. Has pluckable foam on the bottom level so you can arrange how you want everything. I have the 42″ and highly recommend. I just put my 5th rod (a 42″ Med)in mine and could do one more. Sturdy and not too heavy IMO.

I just bought a otter hard case this year and have yet to use it, a buddy has one and I know they are great but to large for what you are talking about.

Good fortune for you finding that Otter hard case this year since Otter discontinued offering that. A rare find indeed… wink

I once had one too, although it was a bit large for my applications.

I had these smaller cases for years and found they worked best for my style. I don’t bushwack with an ATV or snowmobile over ice ridges and other rough ice terrain nor do I drive over them either, which the HD cases save your tears.

These smaller more portable cases are not as reckless as they appear. Hard PVC tube protects the rods and offers protection for the reels too.

Lightweight, with zippered storage pockets on both sides and shoulder straps if you need to carry to accommodate more room in your sled or flip over. Room for rods up to 34″, I can fit 4 per case. I have 2, one for walleye/pike rods…the other light panfish rods.

    I think I paid 20-25$ each.

Yes good fortune for sure! Thanks again Andy I will make sure it is put to good use. Looking forward to the Ice season, hope to meet up with you on the pond. Maybe have some spam burgers, I have not tried spam since I was a kid. grin

Those smaller cases you showed are fine I used to have some I have since gifted to others.

I’ve done the same but with more mods. I’ve plucked out the ends for reels to sit down in, Also rearranged the foam layers and 1″ foam to it. Next going to make a compartment in the middle for storage. Right now I have 9 combos in it room for more. It’s a little bulky but things are safe and beats having 2 cases for the wife and I.

Frabill ice rod case. Not the xl. It’s 38″ long doesn’t take up loads of room. Won’t work if you run longer rods.
