I am sure I will get a lot of answers on this.

A buddy and I twice now have rented a shack for a few nights on Mille Lacs. We have stayed with Portavilla and Appledoorns, both great experiences. Lot’s of fish at night, but couldn’t keep any. We have had good luck but would like to see if there are other options. We are looking for a location that has bother eaters and a chance for a big fish, perch are fine too. We are thinking of taking our young boys this time, so more action might be nice.

We would like to know who people have used on different lakes. Especially around the middle of January We would be willing to drive 4-5 hours. We are in the Twin Cities. Please let me know who you have used and any feed back or ideas.

    Thanks in advance

PortAvilla out of Roger’s resort on Upper Red Lake. Brad Hawthorne will put you on fish, and make sure you stay on ’em! You won’t have a problem getting eaters and plenty of big fish to be caught as well! Nice sized crappie and perch up there as well.

I would definatly consider URL for numbers. LOW would be my second choice for the best shot at at 30 incher.

URL will give you tons of nice sized eaters but you will not find many 23″+ fish. LOW will also keep you busy but you may sort through lots of 10″ saugers to find eaters.

It’s hard to beat URL or LOW. Sunset Lodge up on LOTW was pretty awesome this winter. Fish giant crappies during the day and Walleyes during the morning and evening. Pretty constant action for the big crappies and we were filming during the undisputed worst day of the year -50f.

I know it’s a little more than the 5 hour cap you said but in terms of catching a ton of fish, man it’s hard to beat….It wouldn’t be something they would soon forget.
The south side of the lake is a pretty good option and Baudette is about 5 from the cities. It can be a little more morning evening bite but some days they are just hammering all day.

URL in the beginning of the year before the masses come out can be lights out too.

I’d go early, like late December to URL. If your concerned about lack of action, maybe try to get on a perch bite on Winnie? I went out of Zipple Bay on LOW a couple years ago and will never go back there.
