Is it out yet officially? I was up over the weekend and it was going fast Saturday.

You were there…you make the call? jester
Not quite yet I suppose, the big ice sheet pushes back and forth with the wind direction. One side looks open water as far as you can see…the other side has ice piling up through their patio door!
Satellite images make that determination now…not that long ago the “official call” was when Fellegy’s made the boat trip from Garrison to Isle. Some years they started off fine and then had to turn back because the ice sheet was still floating out there! Fun history!

I can’t see any sheet ice on any of the cameras this morning.

I can’t wait to get up there and hook into all those eyes that the dnr says are not there.

    There’s ice….

Just drove by casino and that is pretty packed up, but the rest of the west side is pretty open.

Pretty safe to say it’s out! I’m looking at the first whitecaps of the year on the north end. I think the rain tore up what was left, hovering in the middle of the lake, last night.

The tradition was always when a boat could travel from Garrison to Isle unimpeded by the ice. Not sure that tradition is practiced anymore with satellite images today. For many years it was Fellegy’s that would make that boat trip and Steve has said there were times when all looked clear and the big ice sheet would appear half way across and they would have to turn back and try again the following days, depending on the weather. Tradition also was that the editor of the “Mille Lacs Messenger” would make the official call after they completed the boat trip to Isle. Editor I believe still makes the official call currently and that would be Vivian LaMoore. Guess we’re all waiting on Vivian now…? whistling

they used to call it “ice out”. Then they started calling it “nets in”.. before long, the two were overlapping so bad, they went back to “ice out”. crazy

Consensus on FB from several locals on the lake the date will be April 10th.

Vivian LaMoore (Messenger Editor) posted this on FB a little while ago…
“The Messenger called it yesterday at 8 a.m”

Evidently there were some complaining around the lake waiting for the official word. What’s the big deal you would think but there has been tradition among many around there to have bets on when the official ice out is declared. High stakes stuff…traditional payout is a free breakfast! razz
