I am sure that this has been discussed before, however when I try to do a search, my computer locks up… Not sure what is up with that.

After a few year hiatus from ice fishing I am going to start doing more of it again this winter. Wondering what ice line is the best for panfish. I love braids but, in the winter they freeze up. Has there been any advances in lines to eliminate that? What are you guys using? I have read reviews online it seems like it’s a split on weather not braids work or not.

Lots of people here recommend Sufix Ice Magic. Based on this I recently spooled one of my reels with it. Hope it is as good as they say.

If I use braid I only buy power pro ice tech because you can cut it clean with a nail clipper. Mono sufix ice magic is my go to whether it’s gills, crappies, perch or eyes it’s really soft, holds a knot really well and is more abrasion resistant than other mono I have used. I love the suffix invisible florocarbon for my leaders on braid but I haven’t spooled it up on a reel so I’m not sure how bad it coils up in the cold.

Mono: Sufix Ice Magic is hands down the best.

Braid: my favourite is Fireline it’s a fused braid. Doesn’t hold water like the others. Absolutely hate the PowerPro ice braid it turns into a balled up ice mess outside. I just spooled up one reel with some Sufix 832 ice braid to try. Hope it’s better than the rest of the braids.

Fluoro: Seaguar Invisx 4lb had been awesome for me.

If you plan to fish in a warm house I would go braid. But if you plan to fish outside do a lot a whole happen I would go mono.suffix ice is good but trilene ice has been great to me for yrs. I also would recommend clear lines

For pan fishing, I like 5 pound Power Pro Ice Tec with a 12-18 inch leader of Gamma 2 pound ESP ice. Backfill the reel with some cheaper line and only use about 50 foot of the power pro ice. It will last for years.

…have used Berkley Fireline Crystal Braid for a few years…1lb to 6lb. Great stuff. Never lost a fish due to line breakage, but it’s a little stiff in very cold conditions and not as supple. Decided to try Nano Braid this season. Also started using Fluoro: Seaguar Invisx 4lb too. Too early to post any results or conclusions. Last years short season I used Stren Orange 2lb Mono., Wasn’t too keen on it’s long term durability,(It seemed to be rotted this early season when I was checking my gear),. but its sure was soft & supple with tiny pin mins & iceflies.
