I have an ice house on Mille Lacs and am very curious as to what it weighs. Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this? It is a 10×24 Skid house with metal skids. 2′ center studs, steel roof, wood siding. TIA

Get a small trailer. Find a truck scale. Weigh trailer empty. Put ice house on trailer. Weigh trailer with ice house on trailer. Subract weight of empty trailer.

A resort owner told me roughly 6000lbs. Of course that varies by what you have going on and size. But I was surprised by the number.

Its not a house that will fit on a small trailer. The reason I am asking is, I’ve been told its to heavy to haul out on the ice. I am having a hard time believing it is THAT heavy.

Ask them why they let a diesel pulling a 30′ ice castle out then? they weigh about 15,000 combination…..

Barnacles has a 12×24. But not sure on the difference in materials.

My ice shack is 8000 pounds. I pull it out with my 3/4 ton chevy that is 8000 pounds. And as long as i got 14″ good ice. No worries

Ask your State Police/DOT what kind of donation would be required for them to come out and use their 4 pad portable scale under your ice house,,,,,

That’s a huge shack, but I can’t believe they won’t haul it out with the good conditions we have this year.

On the same note, wood siding, steel roof, 2×4″ studs, and steel runners aren’t exactly light.

I’d imagine you also have bunks built, a big stove, fridge, couch, futon, bar etc in it. You’d probably be scared to find out what it really weighs (10,000+), but if you have 16″+ of ice, it’s like a toddler riding on a horse.

I’d call around to different resorts…..Some places don’t like steel runners. They glide a little “too easy.”

With a skid house the weight is spread across a greater distance, a 17′ ice castle coming in at 4400# has all that weight on 2 small points of contact when moving, where your skid house has its weight spread across the whole length. If there is a lot of snow maybe they do not have the means to move it through the snow?

I was told they wouldn’t even think about hauling it out until there is at least 18″ of ice.

Do you have a decent friendship with anybody that races stock cars? An avid racer may have access to race car scales you can place under the four corners of a house to give you a good idea of exact weight as well as how that weight is distributed.,

Aaron, you are correct in everything you say about the weight distribution except the last statement about too much snow on Mille Lacs now. Any resort should have plenty of roads plowed already and they plow spots to put the houses.

To the OP, this just sounds funny. I was just out there and there are plenty of huge houses all over.

Are you requesting it to be put in a specific area where the ice is still not as thick? There are currently areas that did not get as thick as many other areas of the lake.

There has to be more to this story than just the resort refusing to place your house out somewhere on the lake. Care to reveal which resort you’re trying to go out of?

I was told they wouldn’t even think about hauling it out until there is at least 18″ of ice.

And how come you have almost the exact name as the OP? whistling

I personally know of a guy on the south end of the lake that had a resort pull his 10×30 skid out…it’s been there for at least 2 weeks now…

My advise, find a new resort and hire someone to drag it there towards the end of the season…
