Looking to update to ice helix 5 or 7. My two questions are what is the weight difference between the two? Also I can only find the five in the g2, where as the ice helix 7 has the generation 3s. What would I be missing out as far as the generation 2s and the generations 3s?

    Not sure about 2s v 3s.
I use both the 5 and 7 in the boat because I don’t have a chip in the dash mounted 5 and it would su@& to try and get one in.
I use the 7 both summer and winter and have it mounted on the atv/utv for winter navigation. The 7 is a good size to look at for me when your skipping across the ice.

I’m not sure about the 2 vs 3 either, but I’ve used a Helix 7 G2 both summer and winter as well for several years. I really like it.

I know the Gen3 has much better 2d sonar compared to the Gen2. I would guess that would translate to winter use as well, but i’m not sure!

I looked seriously at the Helix 5 & 7 this last fall as Humminbird is what I have always had. I never found a 5 in the G2 series for whatever reason. With that said they are both good units, I thought the 5 was a bit small but the 7 a bit big. I would be mounting it on a Marcum Shuttle as well. In the end I went with a Garmin Echomap 73CV and could not be happier! If your interested I can explain in more detail but the touchscreen is amazing.

I don’t know if the 2d improvements for the G3 will matter for ice. The reason is that the ice ducer is still the 1521. For open water the G3 got a different ducer. If you’re only after ice then going G2 might save a few bucks.

5 vs 7, there’s the weight of the unit but also battery draw. The 7 inch draws quite a bit more juice. If you go with the 7 then get at least a 9ah battery. All a compromise between screen size, money, and battery.
