Well the time has come and my buddy is inquiring me about our annual Lake of the Woods ice fishing trip. I’m getting quite bored with Lake the woods and I’m curious if you guys had any other suggestions. Willing to go to surrounding states and don’t really want to go to Red lake. Open to any suggestions!

I’d have to think alotta people asking the same question.
You need to rent, pulling a shack, ATV’ing, where ya live?
    Serious fishing or beer drinkers?
    Species?

We usually rent a house. We are pretty serious fisherman so not much beer drinking… Walleye, Crappie‘s are the main fish targeted.

My cousin hired Josh Theilen a couple seasons ago in WI as a guide and they did pretty good.
He works his a$$ off and if ice is good he’ll take you out to catch trout/salmon on superior.
He’ll even set you up in a vrbo.

I’d go to Devils Lake. Would recommend hiring a guide to get started. Walleye, perch and Pike are pretty common. You can use 4 lines each too.

Each year myself and 3 buddies take a “trip”. We all fish the river and prefer rivers, but mix it up once a year during ice season. We’ll be doing Devil’s Lake next year after this year’s trip to Northern MN. I’m already looking forward to something different and the multispecies opportunities.

We’re also considering some off the beaten path lakes in the UP of Michigan for future years as being remote is becoming more and more of a priority with the chaos and crowds ice fishing can bring.

Devils Lake or Sakakawea would be at the top of my out of state bucket list. Otherwise if you like to DIY renting an AirBNB/VRBO cabin in Detroit Lakes, Park Rapids, Grand Rapids, Alex or Walker areas would be good.

I was stuck in the same rut so this year instead of doing Red or LOTW we decided to rent a shack from Thalman’s guide service in Ottertail county. Looks to be more of mix of Panfish. I will report back once the trip is complete.

We also rented a shack from them for a few nights and doing a guided day as well. When are you heading there? Middle of Jan for us
