Ice Fishing River Backwaters

Last Saturday my buddy and I iced a river backwater for the first time. We have fished it in the summer months but weren’t sure of all the species in there, their population, depth, structure, etc. These unknowns were the reason we decided to ice this body of water. We wound up catching a lot of fish and 5 species on the day. The highlight came when I hooked into a Channel Cat that was roaming above a school of Crappies – my first Channel through the ice.

I love fishing the backwaters of the Wisconsin river in Spring Green and Lone Rock area. Watching that video got me pumped up! Now I feel like calling in sick tomorrow and head out fishing! whistling

Wabasha finger lakes would be an OK place to start whistling

I was using a 32″ TUCR Precision before that and packed up to jump holes when I saw this mark come in above a Crappie school. Thinking it was a larger Crappie I dropped my 24″ UL and sure enough it wasn’t a Crappie! hah

MNBassFisher…….. You do look like you have a fever. I think my mom once said, “ice under your feet will take that fever away!” It’s worth a try!

I felt like I was coming down with something on Friday so I took PTO and hit the river for some open water Smallmouth fishing! What a good way to kill a fever – wading in colddd water.
