Hello everyone, I am wayyy new to Ice fishing, actually I haven’t even done it before. So I wanted some advice on what sort of tip up I should use, since I figure that with my luck, I will buy one that is so poop that it breaks and is pulled into the depths on the first bite. SO BESTOW UPON ME YOUR ADVICE

Just about any tipup will do a decent job but some offer better features than others. I have a handful of the Frabill Insulated and some standard Beaver Dams. Both do good but the newer Frabill insulated are not near the quality of the older models 5+ years ago.

I used my old Frabill insulated ones yesterday and they worked great for 8+ mid-20″ pike in just a couple hours. There are obviously higher quality tipups out there, but they are basically the same design, just better than the cheaper models. Buy the best one you can justify and start setting the hook!

I suggest watching eBay, yard sales, and local places for quality used gear. Old beaver dams never die. You might have to tune them up, but that’s it. Budget wasn’t mentioned. Good gear costs money but holds up. I use jack traps and beaver dams. I like the jacks better. You will be money ahead long term with fewer quality pieces than more plastic Chinese junk. We all have “spares” in our basements, ask around and you’ll be surprised what turns up!

I like the frabil insulated ones aswell. I agree the newer ones aren’t as good as they used tobe but still better than most. Theres a lil tacklebox on the side for your basics and they store very nice in a 5gal bucket
I also recommend using coated tipup line

For price and durability you can never go wrong with HT original polar tip-ups. Cheap and will last a long, long time. No problem catching 40″ northerns.
