Family recently moved to Montevideo. I am planning on visiting and possibly doing some ice fishing if the weather provides.

The lake is a lot bigger then I thought. Where do most people access the lake ?

Any local baitshops reccomended over others ?

    Thanks.

Do a short trip to big stone perch are biting around there if you want some action. May not be huge jumbos but very good eaters. Artie’s bit and tackle is the place to hit up there.

From the ages of 7-21 my dad would take me out there goose hunting. During mid day when the birds weren’t flying we would go fish down by the blue bridge in Milan. There is and access and a little bait shop right there. We had quite a bit of success just fishing from shore. Not sure what the ice is like there in the winter, but should be worth checking out.

From the Monte side of the lake, I believe most people use this access, they call it the Claybanks access IIRC.

I know you can get bait in Monte at Runnings, they bought the local sporting goods store in town a few years ago. Mitlyng’s near the state park is your other option, would give them a call during the week to see when they’re open.

LQP and Big Stone fish pretty similar, everything swims together in the basin. Walleyes were down a couple years ago, not sure where the population stands now; bluegills and crappies have been the main target for the last 8-10 years with eyes mixed in. Hope this helps, good luck.

Can you access a number of spots without an ATV? Tired of going up north and feeling stuck and limited without an Atv.
    Thanks

Yes, especially when there is little to no snow on the ice. Lots of guys fish near the current seam north or south of the HWY 40 bridge. You need to pay attention to the ice though. There are other ramps that have rock piles or gravel bars within an easy walk from the ramp.

Fished Christmas eve morning for 6 hours. Caught 1 crappie. Ice was anywhere from 5-8″.

    Neat area to explore.
