I live on a lake and am going to have a tip-up party. Is it legal to have a fire out there? I was thinking it would be in a barrel so there would be no mess.
Did this years ago,not a problem as long as you take everything back with you.And a fire in a barrel was the only legal way to do it while smelt netting.
Not considered an open fire when in a barrel or such.As explained by a warden in WI in the late 70s.
I think the barrel or a fire stand is a good idea. We had a fire directly on the ice and as you can imagine the melting ice DID impact the fire and prevent it from getting as big/warm as we wanted.
A buddy of mine has 2 fires a year out on MilleLacs. Has a big dish like thing with holes in the bottom/side for air. We’ve never had a problem. Like said above, as long as you take all the ash and whatever is left off the lake when you are done, You are good to go! I’ve seen some pretty big “pallet” fires up at Eel Pout Fest & as far as I know, no one has ever said anything unless you leave a mess.
I don’t know the legalities, but I do know that there is always a fire or two on the ice at Eelpout Festival and the law enforcement is very prominent there on the ice too. They never seem to have a problem with it, but it’s always inside a big fire barrel.
That’s nice…but what do you do with the car hood the other 360 days a year you don’t have a fire on the lake?
If it’s not an eye sore for the neighbors or yourself, stand it up against the back of the shed, rinse it off and store it in the shed, or better yet, use it to keep firewood dry
For storage, I wouldn’t recommend a hood off a 66 Cadillac……more like a 99 Geo Metro
