Hey, I’m looking for any advice on places to ice fish close to Winona Mn. New to the area an was hoping someone could tell me some places besides the Winona Lakes that are within no more then a 30 minute drive of Winona. Shorter the drive the better. And I would really prefer to catch some pike. Thanks

You should look on a map for McNally Boat Landing. I haven’t fished that area for al ittle while. I graduated from WSU December 2012. We used to fish early ice in that bay an absolutly slaughter pike and large blue gills. I remember one day we went through about 8 dozen suckers. We caught so many nice pike it was a blast. There were times when we had 3 or 4 flags up at a time. The largest one that day went 40″ and about 20 lbs. It was an absolute giant. You’ll aslo get your fair share of largies too. I remember having the best luck right along the shore line close to the boat landing. A little farthr down the dike raod, there is another harbor called Minnesota City Boat Harbor. There are a lot of pike roaming that area as well.

The tips on McNally and MN City Harbor are good ones. If you just drive out on the Prairie Island road you’ll see a bunch of guys fishing the backwater areas along there from the culvert all the way up to MN City. Another good option would be to head down to the LaCrosse area and fish Lake Onalaska or the other backwaters in that area.

The tips above are all good places to look. There are also some backwater areas just across the river on the Wi side. Again if you are just starting out and completely new to the area take a drive and see where others are at and don’t rule out doing some exploring either.

    Good luck out there

You could also try below the spillway by Dam 6.Park along the road,it is a short walk there. They get some real nice pike there.Be sure to carry a spud bar along to check ice with.

Are there any places that are good fishing but not a lot of people? I have no problem walking in order to have a spot all to myself
