Ice Castle Furnace Battery Issue

So my buddies castle will not turn on the furnace without the gen running. So of course we thought battery and we ordered one and got one with the old with the removable caps to check and fill water. My question is he was worried about it cause when he took out the old one it had a sealed battery. Is there any reason to be worried about that? And it was warm out last night when he swapped it but the furnace kicked on and ran for 20 minutes.

To be safe he should put it in a vented box.

They’re relatively cheap and easy to install. Just be mindful of any possible wiring, and don’t punch a hole all the way through the shack without first checking behind the interior wall)

Thanks, I should have clarified it is a 2021 RV edition and has the vented box, weird why a battery would be bad after only a year and it tests ok. It was just the difference between the sealed OE battery and the one we got that had the caps that had us wondering.

John, I don’t trust much of anything manufactured lately. I’ve been running into so much urine poor quality lately. Very disgusting to see it so wide spread among so many different industries. Hopefully it was just a crap battery and no other issues

Get the old battery load tested if you still have it.

We did load test it we work in automotive and it tested ok. But the other battery ran the furnace fine, granted it was warmer out. Question was is it safe to run the battery with pop top caps rather than a sealed battery in the house.

I run dual interstate 27s in my house with the caps , I have them under the bench seat. No issues . I actually need to replace them next year as I’m going on 7 plus years with them.

Should be vented, for off gasing purposes.

X2 on that. Because the are being charged via your converter/charger, they can because of their vented caps off gas and that gas is flammable.

You say you load tested them? What is the standing voltage on each battery? Hard to believe a battery that load test good but will not run a furnace. Also by load test do you mean the little handheld one that just reads the resistance or one that uses a big ass resister and actually draws 100amps?

The big Snap on Vat tester. It started at 13 volts and dropped to 9.7 when load tested to 50%.
