Ice buildup on auger blades

My father and I purchased a Jiffy Pro4 lite auger this year and so far i am more than happy with it, but while fishing today i had a really big problem with ice buildup on the blades on the auger. After drilling some holes and fishing for a while, i went to drill more holes and the cutting tip on the end of the auger was a solid block of ice and snow. This caused the auger to just spin and not drill down. has anyone had a similar problem and any ideas on how to prevent it?

When you are done drilling, spin the auger a few times to get the excess water off then keep it out of the snow.

Pam cooking oil works but you’ll have to spray it everytime you go out. Also heard of guys using wd-40 too.

Had the same problem Saturday and I put it over the heater in the shanty for a few minutes and got the ice off. I’ve heard other guys on here talk about putting pledge on the blades. But make sure you spray it on when the blades are dry. I’m gonna go try it right now.. wave

Wd-40 for me. It seems to make it all weekend vs cooking spray making it the day.

I think everyone has that same problem but I carry a small propane torch. Lightly torch it and all the ice comes off.

when it’s cold and windy I use Pam too. Also give the cutting blades a squirt before I throw the cover on for storage. Keeps em from getting rusty.

I pull mine all the way out of the water after drilling the last hole and try to keep any ice and snow from getting on it… On sunny days face the bottom of the auger blades towards the sun and let the black absorb the solar power… If its close to my truck, I try to get it on the tailgate asap as well…

Upon drilling your last hole, drill about 1″ into dry ice (i.e. not wet from the hole you just drilled).

That will dry your auger blades – removing any water from your last hole. Then there is nothing to freeze.

If you ever see me drilling a string of holes, on the last one you’ll see me do a quick touch on the ice near the last hole. That eliminates any icing.

With a hand crank auger just several turns so it stays upright keeps it free as well

Use a torch and melt it or bust it off with a hammer.

Try putting it back down a previously drilled hole and running it for a while. Better than beating on it.
