Ice auger covers (IDO Staff)

As I’m sitting at home today and tonight with a wicked case of the stomach flu, I’m on a bit of a IDO youtube binge. The one thing I keep noticing that makes me cringe is the IDO team jumping over their augers with no protection on the blades, and leaving them uncovered what seems like all of the time. Call me a nervous nelly if you want, but this is a recipe for disaster. A friend of mine slipped last year and cut his ankle to the tune of 48 stitches.

Don’t remember the exact video but it was lake of the woods for lake trout and I think multi species. Pat was the one that did it.

You will never see my auger uncovered when not in use.I paid the price for that 23 years ago.Cut up my left hand pretty good.As far as others,I just keep my distance.

I still see quite a few walking on the ice with an unguarded auger on their shoulders, pail in back and blades forward. One slip, and?

I’m guilty of not covering my auger…what makes it worse, I use a Nils…I should really get into that habit…

I’m another one who (while having cut myself in the past) still forget/fail to cover it most of the time. Usually by the time I’m done drilling holes, someone has marked fish…and then covering the auger slips down the priority list.

Cold Snap auger covers! I own a Nils, and their auger covers are awful. The COld Snaps are the way to go!

Auger blade is way down on the totem pole of things to worry about for me. There’s a blade on it, be careful, end of story. Just like any heater, it’s hot, stay away.

How did your buddy cut his ankle? Wasn’t wearing any boots?

I somehow have a habit of always covering my auger immediately after using it.

Accidents can happen anywhere though. A few years ago we were fishing in the boat, spare rod laying on the floor, friend in flip flops accidentally stepped on the reel. The handle on the reel snapped and then went clear through the bottom of his foot and was sticking out the top of it.

I’ve witnessed a bad accident, right through some Carhartts, blue jeans and long jons, a clean cut and ruined a fishing trip. If not covered it’s way out of the way. I cringe when I see somebody driving along with an uncovered blade on an auger rack on the front of an ATV or snowmobile, recipe for disaster!

I saw a guy slice open a brand new pair of boots on an uncovered auger. He didn’t cut himself but the boots were done. Ever since then I’ve been in the habit of covering the blades.

I’ve been to stores where they have augers on display and sometimes they won’t have a cover over the blades.
