I was asked about management tags….

that aren’t filled during a regular season. The question was can an unfilled management tag bought during the regular gun season be filled during the muzzleloader season. I’ve never paid much mind to this scenario and have zero idea if anyone has ever encountered it themselves.

I’ve always just bought the basic muzzleloader license if I still have a deer to harvest and want one thinking I’d have to have that license to start with. I suppose if someone bought three licenses to hunt the regular season and one or two tags went unfilled this might come up. I still have a management tag to fill but will likely be picky about what I use it on…. I don’t really need the meat unless I decide I want to make some summer sausage again this year. A buddy and I were talking about how the season has been going this fall and he asked about the muzzy season and the extra tags during it. I had no idea what to tell him.

    Anyone know?

Yes you can use a management tag (bonus tag) from one season to the next, page 63 in the law book covers it if you want to take up a little reading.

Thanks Justin. I looked for my game booklet but I think Ma tossed it with the newspapers a while back. I’ll run into scheels tomorrow and grab another.

I honestly always just purchased a muzzle loader license. I didn’t realize a bonus rolled over. Learn something new everyday

Bearcat you still would need to buy a regular muzzleloader license, but could use a bonus tag that you had bought during regular firearm season if you decide to take a doe and wanted to save the main muzzy tag for a buck.

Jimmy, download the rulebooks on your phone, that way you will have it with you at all times if a question comes up, I do that with all 3 books (fishing, hunting, waterfowl)

    So there is no confusion.

There are disease management tags and there are bonus tags. They are not the same.

Disease management tags are only valid for cwd management zones (6xx). They can be used to tag a doe within any season. Must have a license for that season of course. These cost $2.50ea whether resident or not.

Bonus tags are valid in any area except hunters choice and bucks only areas to tag does. Must have a license for that season of course. These tags cost $19 to $90 resident vs non.

Neither can be used to tag a buck… except the disease tag can be used to tag either sex during the late season special cwd hunts which are around Christmas.

Jimmy is correct. You can use a bonus tag purchased during rifle season or during bow season for that matter during muzzleloader season. But you would still need a muzzleloader license. Must have a valid license for the season you are hunting
