Try disconnecting the power, not just turning it off, then read the manual, then plug it back in.

Is this your first time using it? Does it work in simulation mode?
    Are all connections snug.
Temperature work out of water and read air temp?
    Transducer clicking out of water?
When you hit the power button momentarily, does it say sonar on or off?

    Check that stuff

I called humming bird this morning and was on hold for 20 mimutes they told me to update software which i gotta figure out how to do and where i can buy a micro sd card at.Im hoping that this will solve the issuse if not i half to send it im for a 80 dollar repair.if that happens i might switch units to lowrance because i was not happy at all with the customer service of humming bird.I love the helix but the company isnt there

The update is super easy. Just load the chip from the computer, place it in the unit, and let it do its thing. It literally took me 10 minutes from start to finish. Following instructions is the key.

I was once a Lowrance fan… That is until I tried to update one of my units. I followed the instructions exactly and It bricked it. The only thing it was useful for was an anchor. The customer service was by far the worst I have ever dealt with. Because my $1200 unit was out of production they could not help or talk with me and promptly hung up.

    I’m not sure your there.

Did you follow up with anything suggested. You do realize that most people trying to help you here have years and years experience.

Read the frigged manual. It tells you how to update software. SD cards are sold in stores.

Why ask for advice if you aren’t willing to lift a finger when told how to troubleshoot.

Pretty sure if you print out all the information above and go to your boat and start checking off items and report back that we’ll save you some money buddo

    Gabe I hear ya man.

I’m sure to some a few hundred bucks ain’t no biggie, but for others that can be a huge investment. And once you go pick it up and get er home you know what you have to do, fix it! Update it! However you want to put it, you as a customer need to take extra steps to make sure it’s running like it should. Is it the world we live in, sure, but it still is crazy IMO that this crap isn’t taken care of automatically for you.

Good luck with your unit, hope it turns out.

Gabe I don’t know if you bought your unit at cabelas or not but if so they do the software updates at the store for free. Best to go on a week day, sometimes they are too busy to do this on weekends..

Your assuming it is not user error.
    I’m betting it’s nothing but.

I’m almost in belief that his sonar is turned off and his GPS isn’t locking on quickly because it’s a POS helix 5

My Helix takes about 10 to 15 seconds to find its location.

Im gonna wait til friday when i get paid and go get a sd card from walmart then try it on the computer hopefully that will do the trick if not then might send it in for repair or look else where for a unit. The lady said i have the 7.15 version and now there up to the 7.712 or somethin like that so hopefully it will be taken care of.
Ive been looking at the lowrance units also they seem nice.
And Frydog 62 thanks for the tip about cabelas ill ask around and see if mills or scheels would do the same

Wow guys….. lighten up!!!! I was on this site a few years back and quit signing in for this very reason. Just because you have light years of experience doesn’t give you the right to treat someone like crap!!!! If that’s the way it is around here then I’ll just leave again.

Gabe did you try all those easy things that were pointed out to you? You probably should before you send it in.

Gabe, I think I had the same issues with my helix 5 si last year. I believe the fix was to restore factory default settings. Some times those units dont like a particular setting adjustment and it goes all goofy. Also there is a forum called side imaging soft that is very helpful with humminbird units. Its an un official site run by humminbird employees.

    Gabe
The first set is to create a my humminbird account and register your unit. It is a good idea to register your sonar. Once you create the account you can periodically visit and see if there are any new updates. The updates will provide you with improved performance. This is what is nice about these new digital sonars

    http://www.humminbird.com/Support/MyHumminbird/

Once you registrar your sonar it will let you know about the updates. You down load the update to your SD card put the SD card in your sonar and turn on the sonar and it will do the rest.

I have had very good luck with the customer service from Humminbird. I have had terrible service when I called Lowrance. However I have heard that Humminbird has made Lowrance a more responsive company because of them losing business to Humminbird.

If You have any problems send me a PM and I will walk you through it over the phone. Thanks Bob
