Honestly starting to think this technology is going over my head.I was thinking of getting a used Terrova Instead of new.But now after tax returns I’m thinking of splurging and getting brand new.
    Anyway
I pilot vs I pilot link Bluetooth on lake Pepin Pool 4 I’ve done my research and it makes sense to get Bluetooth but I have no idea
    I have a helix 7 g2

I’m starting to believe less is more but I know some will disagree. I have link but I rarely use it on the river….sometimes I run depth breaks trolling on lakes but even then it’s infrequent. All you really need is a good graph and spot lock. The more electronics you start linking the more opportunity for stuff not to work.

A lot of guys say the Bluetooth helps but mine is the older version and I have a few issues losing connectivity. One thing that would be nice is if you could spot lock from the foot pedal if you have issues with the controllers….not sure if the new generations do that but mine doesn’t. When I had controller issues I had to use the foot pedal and that is not a pretty sight.

I have the I-pilot with Bluetooth. I decided that I wouldn’t use the follow contour with the link. I also don’t have hummingbird graphs so I didn’t want to get new graphs along with a new trolling motor. I have the say the new terrova with the Bluetooth is the cats meow. I love it. It hasn’t let me down yet and has exceeded expectations with spot-lock. I have anchored in waves that are occasionally breaking my bow and it held me in place safely to be able to cast and not worry about moving from my spot. I also didn’t have the puck installed at that time so it could be even better.

The new pedals have that function right on them.

Well there you have it….now I need a new one. The controller not syncing absolutely killed my fishing one day on the river. I couldn’t hold myself in place with the foot pedal to save my life.

You will need a G2N or a xx8/xx9 series to make use of the Ipilot Link.

    Not exactly true:

To the original poster: if your Helix 7 G2 is not a network unit (it would be G2N), then LINK will not work.

Also, bluetooth isn’t an additional option. Bluetooth is used with both iPilot and LINK and standard on the new (starting in 2017) motors.

So I think you have a few of questions.
    1. Since you don’t have a Humminbird unit that is compatible with using LINK, then do you buy new or used with regular iPilot?
    2. To decide new or used, how critical is having good spot-lock?
    3. Powerdrive or Terrova?
    4. If having the ability to follow a contour so LINK is something critical to you, then you’d need to get a new Humminbird, so even more cha-ching.

If I were you and if you can swing it, I’d recommend a brand new motor with iPilot.

Lots of guys selling off their old ipilots to upgrade to Bluetooth model. They have their issues but they still are good functional motors. I’d opt out for buying used, should be able to get good deal on one. They know why they’re selling and you do too, work that price down.

I bought a used Bluetooth Terrova ipilot about a week ago. Saved about $1000. They’re out there.

Sold my g2 Terrova in the process. Not totally satisfied with how much I got but im sure I’ll be grinning from ear to ear when I get the chance to use the new one.

If you buy used , be careful what year you buy . Some years , the spot lock was crap , not sure what years though . I have a first generation terrova with ipilot , works fine. My brother bought one a couple years later , his spot lock is all over the place , constantly over correcting.

You don’t need link on the river. Those that think it is a must have are just techie nerds.
