I-Pilot Remote turns on/shuts off whenever it wants

Went out this weekend with new trolling motor and the first couple hours everything worked great. After that, the remote would only work when it wanted to. I’d drop down the motor, hit a button on the remote to turn it on and nothing, screen blank. Messed around with it for awhile and eventually pulled out the foot pedal. After 10-30 minutes of using the foot pedal, I’d randomly look down at the remote and all of a sudden the screen would be on, then I’d use the remote until it would decide to shut off again.

Anybody have any issues with the remote? It could be as simple as the battery, but it’s new, and when it worked it worked great. I would think if the battery would be going out the screen would fade a little, the response time would be slower going to the motor, etc. Worked great when it wanted to work! Then it’d go off and I’d switch over to the foot pedal till the remote decided it wanted to turn back on. Went through this process probably 10-15 times on Saturday.

First thing I would do is change the remote battery. I found when my battery gets a little weak if I turn my back to the motor then it will shut off. Pretty frustrating. I thought I had a good battery but changing the battery fixed the problem.

Also check your trolling motor connection to trolling battery. When loose, my remote goes crazy. Sounds though that your motor worked with foot pedal but another thing to check.

Yes, it worked completely fine with the foot pedal. I picked up another battery this morning. Hopefully that’ll solve it.

Mine does this too. Drives me nuts! And I do have fresh batteries. I did hear from another source that you need to “relink” the remote to the head and that should solve the problem. Who knows.

I’ll put in the new battery, read through the directions to relink it, and hope that solves it. It’s frustrating when you spend some good cash on a new toy then use it and it doesn’t work right! Then again, I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of a boat part that works 100% correctly.

Same problem I had. New battery did the trick.

If I lose connection to the trolling battery mine will shut off too. Just check all connections works for me.

I don’t think that’s the case because the motor still works with the foot pedal. Just the remote not working.

Both me and my buddy had the same issue; he was told by someone at MinnKota to bend the remote’s battery contacts to create more pressure on the battery. That has cleared up the issues for both of us.
