I was out on cedar lake, south of prior lake for some panfish. There was 11-12″ of ice, top part refrozen after the rain last week. There are full size trucks pulling ice castles. Does anybody check the ice before, or do they trust the ice more than me??

If people’s smart phone doesn’t alert them to danger and proper steps to avoid it, they don’t care. We’ve been so dumbed down by having the thinking and self awareness done for us, that folks can’t use their own brain anymore.
I was working near a lake today and watched 5 trucks with wheel houses head out through the snow, no roads, and nobody got out and checked. Maybe they already knew, but they all drove through virgin snow.

I’ll drive a full size on 10 to 11 of good ice and pull my shack behind on 12. After the rain and the hard freeze it froze and made great ice. No excuse for others. But people are idiots. I would never drive out blindly on a unknown lake

Mince, this behavior has been going on for longer than you or I have been alive. The whole idea of ice fishing is a bad one to begin with because fish are cold blooded. Than means their activity level is dictated by the environment. So when it’s cold, their activity level drops. That’s fact based solely on science. So why are people out there? Great question. Most people out there in the wheel houses have very little interest in fishing. It’s about drinking, socializing, and playing cards. One of these days law enforcement is going to have to step in and literally prohibit access because of this stupidity.

people still catch fish when it’s really cold out.
I think people with a wheel house have a huge interest in fishing. Nice rods, nice reels, nice gear. I’m not saying every last one is interested, but I bet it’s not as bad as you make it seem.

Another item to consider: think about how long people sit in one spot without catching anything before they move. You wouldn’t sit more than 10 minutes in a spot if you were in a boat if you weren’t catching fish. But people on the ice sit there for weeks on end over dead water because it’s “too much work” to move.

Understand this Grant….fishing, be it in a boat or ice shack is suppose to be relaxing, not a job. If people wanna sit in 6″ of water for the whole year it’s ok. It’s their time, their hobby.

I understand what you are saying however until you get into the litter part of the equation I don’t really care what they do.

Along with the dumbing down of America you also have the “monkey see, monkey do” thing. We have all seen the crowd form around one guy who is sitting on a spot you know doesn’t hold fish. But because one guy parks his boat or drills a hole there others will follow.

I catch more fish in the winter then I do in the summer. And I’ll tell you a secret it’s cold in the winter. Not sure where your science degree came from but I’m going to strongly disagree in 95 percent of that statement

Assuming (Grant) has had some not so great experiences on the Ice.

…..He’s a typical pheasant hunter. Shoots them in the ditch and goes home to brag how good of a hunter he is. That’s how all of those guys are.

Lazy idiots…..because “It’s too much work” to walk a cattail swamp…..one day law enforcement is going to have to step in and ‘literally’ stop it.

Grant…..Show us on the doll where the bad ice fisherman touched you rotflol

Wow, just the psychological impact from a near-50 degree day this early in the season would’ve kept me from driving out on a lake south of the metro. No way. It’s not like this was a 50 degree day in March after an entire season worth of ice buildup.

It’s true that newer trucks are lighter than they used to be, but still. Yikes.

    Let’s take this gem apart:

    “Fact based solely on science.”

That sentence means nothing. Are facts usually based on something other than “science?” Throwing around the word “science”? Really? First indicator that you don’t know what you’re talking about.

“So, why are people out there?”

You really believe that people don’t catch fish ice fishing? Do you think fish stop eating in the winter? The top 5 walleyes on my wall were caught on the ice. Care to explain that, scientist?

“Most people in wheel houses have very little interest in fishing.”

Yeah, they dropped 15 grand on a fish house to have beer in it. People cant do that anywhere else. Even if that is the case, who cares? You don’t see the appeal on hanging out with your friends/family with the bonus chance to catch a fish during your card game? Sounds amazing to me.

“Law enforcement is going to have to step in and literllay prohibit access because of this stupidity.”

One, it’s a little funny you’re throwing the term “stupidity” around about others considering all of the points prior to typing that sentence.

Two, this is America. Falling through the ice is a persons prerogative. Big brother doesn’t have to to step in and do anything. If you go through you are paying for it big time (fees for removal, fines, your insurance, your life, etc.) Cut the liberal rhetoric on an ice fishing forum. Go back to the Hilary Clinton forum.

Three, “literally” prohibit access? Would there be a way for them to figuratively prohibit access? Was your English teacher a Kardashian?

Four, you realize more people are killed every year on the open water, right? You want dangerous? Go out on Gull Lake by Brainerd, MN in July and watch the silver-spooners on their wake-boats, jet-skis, and party floatillas. It’s a miracles someone doesn’t die every day out there. Why don’t you go out there and play thought police and tell them to “shut it down?”

What an awful and thoughtless post. Might want to brush up on your “science.” Don’t show up here like you know better than everyone else before you do that.

HMMMMMM. I was at a marine dealer’s open house this weekend, the bass boat right in front was $80 grand. for 6 mos out of the year that you can use it, I couldn’t justify it myself but it will sell and more power to they guy that buys it, There is no way a wheel house will come close to the price tag and if you use it as a camper you have all year use! So I guess my question is, Who’s the stupid one? and how do you figure you can prevent anyone from access to public water?
