Hybrids, Wipers…

With our season being so short here in Minnesota… I’ve thought of doing a late Fall or early Spring trip for Wipers. Either take the boat or maybe not.

Anyone have first-hand experience fishing somewhere in the Midwest for big ones? Might be worth the drive and the effort…

Interested in body of water, time of year, water temps, lure presentations, etc.

Would like to see James and crew do a show like this in the late/early open water season sometime! If not James, grab a camera man, I’ll grab the Doublewood and we can take my boat ;)

I love wipers. I’ll never forget the 18″ I caught under a log on the Minnesota river. It was actually a white bass, but its all the same as far as a fight.

I am surprised people don’t target them more. They seem to be a fall back fish when other fish are slow. They remind me of Crevalle Jacks here. To a T everyone regard them as one of the hardest fighting fish, yet no one goes out looking for them. But if you find a school you fish them. The difference ifs I think white bass make decent table fare.

I totally agree. I went on a trip to South Dakota once – for walleye and crappie. Well it wasn’t the week for those species and we inadvertently caught a bunch of white bass. After about 2 hours we caught 15 or so between 2-3 lbs. My dad turned to me and said these things fight like 5 pound smallmouth… “I’m so spoiled I don’t even want to catch walleyes now!”

Got a phone call from the other party who said to keep a few of the white bass and he’d clean them for us. He took out all the dark meat which left some really nice, white, flakey fillets that were awesome to eat later that night.

I’ve heard the Wipers are similar table fare but get even bigger and fight like He@l! Would be a blast to do sometime.

Still think James and crew should do a show on them… gotta be a shorter drive than the Montana shows they’ve done… or hit Kansas on the way there ;)

I’ve always wanted to go for striper but it’s such a long trip to get to them I figured hybrids would be a possible option as well. I’ve always heard Kansas was a good place to start as well. Next time I get out to the coasts I am going to try to get in a striper trip.

We’ve been watching a lake down south that gets ice every 3rd or 4th year that has a PHENOMENAL bite on big wipers and stripers. 15 – 25 lb fish in big numbers. Some day the conditions will line up and it will happen. When it does, it will be worth the wait.

Great news, when you get it figured out let me know and I’ll offer up a Doublewood for the name of the lake in a PM toast
