Looks like a rock bass to me. Darker than normal. Maybe spawning?

Can’t tell if it has a rock bass’s red eyes, but do rock bass get yellow in the tip of their fins like that?

I would say its just a dark green. A giant and a beautiful one at that.

That is a very nice green sunfish in spawning coloration.

They often hybridize with other sunfish species, but that one appears to just be a large green.

This is not a rock bass. Rock bass do not have an ear and they have a different fin structure. (see picture) Very nice fish! I love the smile waytogo

That’s a big one! If it’s just over 10″, it could be a new SD record. Looks a little short, but it could be close!

Green sunfish are commonly called rock bass in error. This link attached has an example of a true rock bass. The yellow or orange boarder on the fins and large mouth give it away as a green sunfish. Smaller green sunfish usually have thin blue lines on the cheek as well. https://fw.ky.gov/Fish/Pages/Rock-Bass.aspx
