I have to admit that I don’t know a good breeder of Chessies.

I just have to lay this Chesapeake story on you. My neighbors have a Great Dane, but one day I looked over in their yard and there’s Arthur (the dane) and a Chesapeake retriever playing.

So I went over and said to the neighbor, where’d you get the Chesapeake?

Jess says, he’s not ours. I’m dog-sitting for a guy at work. We trade, he’s taken care of Arthur and now it’s my turn to take care of Brutus while they’re in Cancun. Seems to be nice enough dog.

Now it’s worth noting here that Jess is NOT a hunter and has no experience with heavy-duty working/hunting dogs.

So about 2 days later I’m out in the yard again and Jess and Brutus come over and Jess says, “Holy crap. Why didn’t you tell me?”

    “Tell you what?”

“These dogs like Brutus! He’s an animal. You should have seen what he did at the dog park. I thought we were going to get arrested.”

So as it transpires, Brutus was not used to being out and about with other dogs. He didn’t attack anyone, he simply pulled off a terrific retrieve of a running cripple.

What caused the issue was that the running cripple was some ladies 3-leggeed miniature schnauzer. The dog went running off across the park and Brutus cruised by and scooped him up on the fly and brought him back. Luckily, Brutus had a good soft mouth, so no collateral damage was done.

But there was some yelling and general excitement. Damn fine retrievers, those Chessies.

I got mine from northern flight retrievers. His name is butch Goodwin. Ema is 14 now a few years back I wanted another and reached out to him. It looks as though he has gone a different direction and is not breeding any more. Do some research and try to get contact info for him. If you can get his lines you will not be disappointed. I have since gone a different direction with british labs but if I were going to go back to chessies it would have to be his lines or a direct referral from him. There are some bad breeders out there. I got my first one from a local here around the cities. Although the dog lived to be 19 she was a mess. It was my fault for not doing my research. That person still sells to this date don’t no how. If you can find a way get ahold of butch and get a recommendation from him or try to find his lines. My info is 14 years old but could look up my paper work to see who was who if I could find it.
    Heres butchs site

Looks like 2007 was last time he was breeding but there is some good info on there. Years ago I tried the e-mail and never got a response you could try it and see. Also his pedigree is on there so you can look at the lines

I have nothing helpful to add to this conversation, but great story, Grouse! It reminded me of the time we had our Great Dane at a dog park in the winter. An older gentleman was walking around with one of those big, rabbit fur hats. Well, Floyd likes fur, so I was only mildly surprised when he got sight of it, ran up, and took off with the poor guy’s hat. We got it back…eventually.

Now that is funny! I’ve been getting a kick out of Barrett lateley at our house. His’ only 6 months but sitting on the couch like Floyd. Butt on the couch front legs on the ground.

Yeah, I thought it was great too, but apparently having YOUR dog retrieve OTHER dogs at the doggy park is a MAJOR, MAJOR breech of etiquette. No matter how much fun it is for the retriever. The lady with the miniature schnauzer didn’t take it well, from what Jess told me.

Personally, I was really impressed that the Chessie could scoop that little dog up and bring it back without crushing the dang thing. I suppose the poor schnauzer thought it was game over and no use fighting it…

I just put my 11yo chessie down 2 weeks ago, cancer. I will be in the market for a new girl, most likely in the fall. that is when my wife gets laid off and can put some time into the pup and it won’t have to be in a crate all day.
