I have been looking for a simple way to get some action video from my bow and predator hunts. I’ve tried using a camcorder style camera and frankly I don’t have any luck running both devices. So, I’ve been searching for a good and simple product to fill both these voids. I have tried some cheaper models and been quite disappointed, so this time I jumped up a couple price points. Enter the Tactacam. It’s been getting a lot publicity on Facebook lately so I decided to give it a whirl.

I contacted the owner on Monday with a couple questions about the mounts included. He was very prompt in responding. I placed the order Monday night and today my camera was on my doorstep when I got home from work. Over the next few months I’ll be providing updates to this thread and hopefully some footage of my successful hunts. A “realtime” review if you will.

You can see the camera specs here: Tactacam

Day 1 – Received my new Tactacam today. A very quick turn around from order to receiving. Nice to know the cameras come from our neighbors over in Wisconsin. The plastic packaging was slightly dinged up but all the components were perfect. Lots of mounting options, but the #1 for me is the scope/gun mount. This is a solid piece that looks like I shouldn’t have to worry about the camera falling off going to and from the field. Yet it will allow me quickly detach so I can move from rifle to rifle or to my bow. I also like the bow stabilizer mount it comes with. This is made of quality yet light material. The best part is the ease of operation. One button push to turn on and start recording. I love this feature and think it will be a huge asset when in the field.

I’ve charged the device and taken a couple short videos in the house. The quality isn’t great inside. But to be honest, neither have any of the other cameras I’ve tried. Either way, here is an unedited sample, straight off the camera.

More tests tomorrow from the car!

Here is a clip I took this AM on the way to work, from the dash of the pickup. I recorded the full 30 minutes of the commute. I currently have a 16Gb card in the camera, but it will accept 32Gb cards. The 30 minutes of recording utilized a little over 3Gb of data. In theory, the 2 hour battery life should be capable of recording about 12-13Gb of data per charge.

More video tonight on the ride home during prime daylight conditions. Thoughts so far… This just might work for my needs.

This video isn’t great looking through the rainy windshield, but if you go full screen you can see pretty well. Two things. The jackhole who pulls out in front of two cars doing 55mph and the guy riding his motorcycle yesterday in the rain. It was 48 degrees out. I thought fisherman/hunters were mad….

The camera is mounted on the dash, just below the wiper line I learned yesterday.

I was finally able to get my battery to die. I have at least 2.5 hours recording before it gave up the ghost.

A couple of early observations from playing around in the truck and the house. The 1 button On/Record feature is great. This things comes with all kinds of mounts, straps and extra “stuff”. I’ll suggest to boys over at Tactacam to include a little more detailed documentation to explain what all is included and how/where to typically utilize each piece. A question I’ll be asking. Can I purchase a spare battery?

Tomorrow I’ll get some footage practicing with the bow.
