Do you guys prefer the jacket or parka? I went with the parka as a little longer may be better for rain gear.

Ug. The prarie dog trip is over and now I’m left with the butt-[censored] boring part: Processing and prepping all the spent cases for reloading.

My BIL and I went to South Dakota back in June for 3 days of prarie dog shooting. We shot just over 1000 rounds of centerfire and now the reloading fun begins. Popping pasture poodles is just so much fun!

But Holy Hannah, now for the WORST part ever: trimming cases to keep them under the max length. I decided to run everything through the go/no go length gauge and I’m glad I did. Over 600 cases are over length after resizing. Rats. Time to trim.

So the last 2 nights I’ve been down in the shop trimming. I’m using the Lee system with a cordless drill, and if I work at it, I can trim 2-3 cases per minute. I’ve seen all kinds of systems that claim they can do 4 cases per minute or more, but I’m calling BS on that one. No way can anyone keep up that pace over the course of an hour.

Yeah, so for those who just did the math, I’m going to be down in my cave trimming cases until about this time next year. Man, this is the worst job in reloading.

So far I’ve trimmed about 250 cases. Ug. “Only” 400 left to go.

Is there any way to make this less boring?

I really have to hand it to the guys who make the effort to get good videos. My BIL tried to take some vids, but they didn’t turn out very well. IMO, lense quality is a huge factor at these distances and most consumer camers don’t have anything close to what’s needed.

Everybody’s talks about progressive presses as the way to speed up reloading, but what they don’t talk about is the fact that that’s only one small part of the overall process.

I figure about 3/4 of the work is in getting from spent casing to ready-to-load brass. Deprime, resize, clean, polish, trim (if needed), inspect, and finally prime.

Only then are you ready for the fun part: actually loading. Once I have primed cases, I can load hundreds of rounds in a few hours. It’s getting there that’s the PITA.

That is why I have friends who reload for me!!

Actually, I’m so stinkin’ ADHD that I could never do the job consistently and as safely as needed. At least I know my limitations.

Get a tripod and set up the camera near the target.

I feel your pain. Case trimming has to be the worst damn part.

I just got back… and we shot up about 500 rounds of factory loads in addition to my hand loads. Every factory case is long and needs trimming….thanks for the visual on my up-coming job However, the memory of my last shot was a confirmed triple and that makes it all worth while!
