This is great news. Now the states can start managing these critters against all the game species.

The one thing I find interesting, there are ONLY 6100 wolves in the US. If that is the case, which I don’t believe to be true, the small number of wolves have decimated the elk and deer herds out west. We better come up with a very aggressive management plan. Cripes, Mn boasts 2400 of that count alone. Skonny can’t be far behind. Michigan?

I saw yesterday it has cost us (Minnesota) $40,000.00 so far to litigate the tree huggers in all these appeals cases. Nice waste of money!!!!!!!!!

The 6100 estimate has been used for a number of years and everytime the USFWS uses this estimate it is accompanied by a whole bunch of * and footnotes.

Bottom line: It’s a guess. And a rough guess at that.

It is not possible to accurately count wolves to any significant extent. Sampling methods, unlike drumming counts for grouse, etc, are also wildly inaccurate because wolves travel so far and are so evasive.

The bottom line is that there is no bottom line as far as an accurate count. What we can point to is that with the success ratio in the MN wolf season last year, it is obvious that in MN the estimated population is obviously way below the actual count. Seasons need to be extended and more wolves taken until the count levels out.
