A buddy acquired an old 870 recently that apparently has a very hard life. It looks like someone took a wheel grinder, it’s missing the forend and must have been taped to cover the blemishes. When I got it, it was dirty, full of gooey residue and overall just an ugly gun. The purpose of this gun is a truck gun. Something you take when check traps, bouncing around the prairie fixing fence etc… One of the benefits of living in SD in a very rural area.

    Anyway, the pics:

Pic 1 – Black synthetic. Notice the forend in the bottom of the pic(sorry such a crappy pic).

    Pic 2 – base coat primer/paint.

Pic 3 – Side 1 of barrel dipped.

    Pic 4- 6 Finished product.

Now, you may be saying what the heck, zebra? Well, that is my little inside joke. Jeff wanted something in camo of some sort. But he said you pick whatever you think. Well, I think a zebra colored 870 is freakin fantastic!!

you’re getting pretty darn good at that dipping. What’s the average cost to dip a gun?

Oh, I imagine a person has $35.00 or less into each gun. However, the up front of buying all the sprayers and supplies does add up a bit. But then you you only use a little on each gun.

I’m finding the film makes a huge difference. Not sure how to describe it, but some of it is “thicker” and much easier to work with. The leafy camo patterns I’m struggling with. I’ve sanded my shotgun no less than 3 times I’m sure. It’s just not turning out the way I want. I’m yet again looking for a new film to try for it.

I’m making lots of mistakes still, but I’m definitely getting more confident. I’ve tried putting together a video of the process, but’s not good. I’ll try again when I dip the shotgun.
