Two Weeks – Spring is on my brain

Two weeks from today I’m headed for SD. It’s time to start the mineral sites and get the trail cameras out. Won’t do me any good to shed hunt because we don’t winter any deer. I also need to help Dad get his pheasant barns ready for the first run of birds.

I need to re-measure a kill plot and finally put a stake in the ground on what I’m going to plant. SD is so arid typically after June 15th, I can’t hardly plant after that. In the past, we’ve had virtually no success. So, I’m leaning towards a late May planting of something we can mow throughout the summer and to keep it green. I keep going back and forth between a winter rye and clover.

I also plan to set a couple telephone poles(SD trees). This has been on my list for far too long. It’s time I get it done. Dad’s neighbor said there is virtually no frost and some guys are already digging fence post holes. With the 50 degree weather they are going to have, I should have no problem as long as I can get past the mud holes with the tractor.

Last, I need to measure an area we will be planting some cedar trees this year. We are basically trying to close off any view into our plots from the road. This will hopefully prevent a few more pot shots we get each year from the road.

Spring is here in my mind, just not when I look outside…

I hear that!!! I got a few project to get to myself, but after hinge cutting in 3′ of snow last weekend I think I will wait for some warmer weather. My legs are still tired and sore from that
