While driving to Lake of the Woods on Saturday morning I saw this bull elk off the Hwy. Surprised to see this animal there as I didn’t know that is where some of them were. I actually thought they were South of there by Grygala but with that being said I suppose they do move! Just thought I’d share…(Pix sucks but thats what you get with a cell phone and a half hour before the sun comes up and it was foggy!)

Very cool. There is a small herd that crosses back and forth from Canada up in that area. He looks pretty good to me!!

We had a nice 4×4 or 5×5 on trail cam the night before the firearms season between Karlstad and Greenbush.

Nice picture of the elk. Very interesting to see these animals in MN.

It’s always been very interesting to me, the animals that ranged in MN before European contact. As I understand it, the NW quarter of the state had small herds of elk. Never great numbers, but a consistent presence of herds.

Also, the far more common one before European settlement was the Woodland Caribou, which roamed in much of the northern third of MN. These caribou do not live in dense herds as do the barren ground caribou of the far north, so there were never huge numbers, but they were a constant presence until the early 1900s. I recall reading that occasionally all the way into the early 1980s, small herds would cross into MN from Ontario in the winter.

I can only imagine the reaction of the average weekend warrior deer hunter if he were sitting in a stand and a woodland caribou strolled by.

I apply each year for the Mn elk hunt. It’s one of those once in a lifetime deals. Not sure it’s much of an “elk” hunt, but not many can say they’ve done it either. I figure with archery gear anything is a hunt.
