Trap Thrower

My boys (aka: The Men) received a trap thrower for Christmas from their grandpa. Santa had gifted them a pair of 870 Express shotguns and grandpa figured they needed something to practice with. I decided to fab up a stury box to mount the thrower to – it serves two purposes. It makes it very, very portable – and can be used in the winter when the ground is frozen which makes staking it down impossible, and it serves as a storage box for the clays. I made it so it perfectly fits two cases of clays.

It works well – and Grant (my 12 year-old) broke the bird on his first attempt.

Note in the last photo how Bella is “looking for the birds.”

Nice idea. I, too, get tired of trying to pound the thrower into hard ground only to have it work its way loose.

Question: Is the whole outfit heavy enough so that the thrower doesn’t move the box too much on each throw?

What’s it made out of? 2X6?

    Nice idea.

It’s heavy. The base and the lid are made of 2×6’s and the sides are 2×4’s and 1/2″ plywood. The rope handles make it a little easier to carry – otherwise it’s a beast to lug around.

It’ll shimmy around a little bit in the snow, but not enough to be a problem.

My dad had one when I was growing up that he’d made out of an Army crate intended for mortor shells.

What a great set up! Makes me wish I had some storage space! Oh well….. I guess I’ll just keep standing on the back leg to keep it down!

I got tired of standing on the back leg, so I took some scrap treated deck lumber and built a “Rock Box”. The trip is bolted to a T brace on top and the box is filled with rocks.

The problem is unlike the nifty box, it’s not really portable. I can dump the rocks out and move it, but where ever I move it to, I need to then find a supply of rock to give it weight again.

I still dont get how you can reset that thing without the box moving too much?
