Would like to get an AR style gun for varmits. Are they still avialable anywhere in shops or is it a complete waste of time to look.

We are getting one or two in a week but they go very quickly. I know most shops are out or have raised the prices to ridiculous prices. We have not been increasing our prices on them as they come in. Just happy to move some product quickly. Of course, there are a lot of people looking for them and we have decided to not take any names on them and just sell them to the first customer who sees them. My suggestion to you is to hang in there and see what transpires. Besides the cost of the gun, the ammo is going to be a real problem for awhile. If you have got a good supply of .223 than go for it but if not I would wait or look into other options. Chris Winchester

Panic crazed eejets are buying anything at any price. That’s creating havoc and as Chris mentioned even the ammo is a problem.
Why not wait and do your homework on what u really want?

January 21, 2013 at 3:07 am #128966Unless your lucky and just happen to be some where like 4 seasons that wont gouge you right when they put one out they just got in your gonna pay at least double what they are realy worth right now. Also Unless you have a good stockpile of .223 you won’t be shooting it much either.
johneePosts: 731January 21, 2013 at 2:25 pm #128974I think the central problem is that those of us who want guns for hunting (as opposed to just shooting) are a fairly particular lot. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think so. Not just any AR is going to do, you’re going to research and narrow it down to a couple of preferred options.
But in the current panic-crazed environment, you’re going to have almost no chance of finding the preferred options. And if you do get lucky and actually find the gun in stock somewhere, you’re going to pay double. But that will probably only come into play after months of agonizing frustration.
Why put yourself through it? I can’t see it being worth the money and the hassle. Later this year the panic will subside, supply will catch up, and then you can buy the gun AND find the ammo to actually shoot it.

January 21, 2013 at 4:24 pm #128975heard some great news from the Shot Show. Nearly every manufacture is sold out through 2014 production. Sold out means Cabelas, Sportsmen, Gander, and local stores have purchased entire production runs through 2014 production. So as soon as more are built, they will be hitting the stores!
January 21, 2013 at 4:29 pm #128976Good info ,thanks. I have a lead on a Rock River from an Iowa Source with apparently no markup. In the meantime I will use the mini and .243.
January 21, 2013 at 4:51 pm #128978I did see one in FleetFarm in Oakdale on Saturday. I’m sure it didn’t last long. I was there a week before and they were out, so there must be at least a few trickling through their supply chain. Might want to check in with them once in a while if you have one close. The good news is that it seemed to be still priced at pre-panic level.
Everyone is right about ammo though. I have checked several places and have not seen one box of 5.56 or .223 in the last month.
January 21, 2013 at 4:55 pm #128979Element arms was out too last i heard and thats all they sell. WOW its nutz out there.
January 21, 2013 at 7:17 pm #128985I still see ammo. Gander in Woodbury has been outstanding at keeping up but the guns themselves are all but dried up. I would put that purchase on hold. As a matter of fact that’s exactly what I am doing.
bowhuntmnPosts: 130January 22, 2013 at 4:16 am #128998I cannot believe how insane, and irrational, people have become! I love my guns as much as the next guy, but this is out of control…and we aren’t helping.
Look at it this way, the gun manufacturers are licking their chops because:
A) We are buying current stock at rates that are depleting near every gun store in the country. Guns are going out the door at unprecedented numbers, and demand is out of this world. You can thank the government for spreading this panic.
B) Manufacturers, to profit, adapt much more quickly than most people realize. The government imposes a change or modification? Easy enough, the manufacturer stays within the guidelines, but still tries to please their customer base. The gun business is no different.Lets face it, AR15’s, SKS’, AK47s’, etc., are not going away anytime soon. I just cannot see that happening. I certainly would not want to be the guy that goes door to door collecting them!
I may be wrong, and if the government decides to take our guns away then may god be with us, but at least then I have an extra $1,000 in my pocket because I did not panic buy the first assault rifle that I came across!
My advice would be to hold off and see what kind of changes come about, and then make your purchase based off of that. If you have lived without an AR for this long, you should be okay without it for the next couple of months!January 22, 2013 at 10:32 am #129000Part of the problem is people buying them to make some quick cash. I know of a couple guys that have an employee at a store that doesn’t mark them up call when they get them in then they buy them and sell them on the internet for double the price. Not right to me but i’m sure thats going on all over the country.

The problem is there wouldn’t be people doing this if there weren’t BUYERS ready/willing to bend over.
If everybody would just calm down and stop panic buying for 1 month, everything would be back to normal. The problem is the hoarding that’s going on where people that shoot 100 rounds per year are buying 20,000 rounds of ammo “just in case”.
Just in case what? Nobody’s even talking about an ammo ban, and nobody on the Federal level believes for a second that a full-on ban on ARs is going to happen. 50 round mags? Yeah, maybe. But a full Federal ban on the guns themselves? Where can I get odds on that because I want to make some money.

January 24, 2013 at 7:53 am #129085I couldn’t agree more about the panic….. I fight “dealers” by just removing myself from the market. I don’t HAVE to have an AR that’s really not much more than a cosmetic difference of what my semi-auto Remingtons will do! This is ridiculous….. and I just won’t play. There’s enough people doing this panic purchasing for financial leverage that I think many will become disappointed in the long run. A gun they don’t want and can’t get rid of because THEIR potential market IS limited and won’t last long. Hit it while it’s hot…. and get out. BUT, they won’t make a dime out of me.
I guess Gander gets the last laugh on the ammo situation. They have everything you need if you want to pay premium prices for your ammo. That just sucks……
