    Thanks Kooty.

My boy shot a doe in October and tagged her with his archery tag, not bonus tag. We hunt in 156 which is “managed” so we can take 2 deer. Can he take a buck with his regular firearm tag?

I don’t think so. Bonus permits are doe only and once you tag a deer with your primary liscense (archery or firearm) as I understand you are relegated to bonus permits only.

However if you are party hunting with him he would be able shoot a buck and use your tag.

That is correct. His “regular” tag is gone. Only a regular tag can be used on either sex. Management tags are antlerless only. Like said, he can party hunt bucks as long as someone is willing to tag it for him

Even though it’s a different season? So they basically force you to buy a bonus tag if you wish to take a doe archery and want to shoot a buck rifle? The way I read it, we can take 2 deer, of which only one can be a buck during all seasons. By using his “regular” archery tag on a doe, his “regular” rifle tag is only good for a doe?

Correct. He used his regular tag, whether it is Archery, Shotgun, Rifle or Muzzy, that is your BUCK tag. Not always a either or tag, that depends on area. BONUS tags can ONLY be put on antlerless deer and you can only use 1 “regular” tag per year, per hunter. Unless something has changed, that is how it has been forever. The wording below, is where it says “1” either tag per year…

    HUNTER CHOICE DEER AREAS

All hunters are limited to taking one either-sex deer total per year in one hunter choice deer area. There is no application for permits. If you hunt in a hunter choice deer area, your license is valid for an either-sex deer. Bonus permits are not valid in hunter choice deer areas. Refer to page 71 for a list of hunter choice areas.
