On the radio this AM they said that 50 kills were registered for the first 2 days.
But from there, the DNR anticipates that kills will fall sharply as more than half of all deer hunters hunt less than 3 days per season.
Also, I’ll bet there’s some number of wolves out there who have suddenly realized via the crack of a bullet zipping past them that game has changed and they are no longer the untouchables on top of the food chain.
Speaking to the ranch manager this weekend where we hunt and for this year they have had 4 DNR confirmed wolf kills of cattle which includes 2 stock cows and 2 calves.
They also have 9 other “lost” calves that simply disappeared. The cow dropped the calf somewhere at sometime, but no sign of it was ever seen. He freely admits that calves die of all kinds of causes and in a normal year they will 3-5 of these cases with their stock cows. 9, however, is a very high number historically for them on a spread that runs 1000 head and they strongly suspect that several of these may also be wolf kills.
Bottom line is that the number of trapped and shot wolves will need to be vastly increased in order to bring the population back into control. As I predicted, success rates are so far very, very low.
