Well, without drawing a doe tag or a wolf tag that means I have a number of deep woods spots I will be focusing on looking for antlers. That means my favorite Ruger #1 in 45-70 will be the rifle to go to.

Here is the problem. We switched scopes on the rifle and I needed to sight it in. I have 20 rounds made up for that rifle. After some stumbling getting it sighted in I now have 6 rounds left.

We are moving so all my reloading supplies and tools are packed away. Those 6 rounds are all I’ve got right now.

Sure a person only needs 1 round but dang. I was starting to sweat it. In the end I did get a 1″ group (2 shot group) dead on at 100 yards. Sighting it in I did shoot multiple 1″ groups (2 shot group) so I feel comfortable without the 3rd shot in the groups.

6 rounds for a hunt with a single shot…. You should be good for 6 yrs.

Historically yes. I can assure you I will make 100% sure it doesn’t get knocked around so I know it stays on.

With a No. 1 I’d say that things wouldn’t be going exactly to plan if you were to need all 6 rounds. Or 3 of the 6 for that matter.

Then again, it’s a .45-70. That’s not exactly the rarest cartridge on Earth. In a pinch, most places like Fleet, Joe’s, or Gander will have ammo. Back in the day when .30-30s roamed the Earth, the .45-70 was actually even more common, so there are still plenty of them out there.

    Factory ammo?

Yeah, I guess that would work.

I also have a box of 18 rounds of 405 grain solids that I loaded up to the low end of the .458 Magnum. I did shoot two rounds out of that box years ago before I put them away and hoped I would forget about them.

Didn’t you know, you need at least a .300 Win Mag to shoot a 55# yearling doe.

At least that is what a novice would believe watching 75% of the guys at the gun range and/or guys shopping the cabelas hunting counter.

Amen to that. I have been told in all seriousness by a member of the gun counter staff at Gander that, and I quote, “Most elk guides will tell you that the .300 Win Mag is a little too light for elk.” He want on to recomend the .338 as being your basic beginner’s rifle for elk. Oh, and you could use it for whitetail too.

So to all you guys who have been using the .300 Win Mag to kill millions of elk over the past half century, you must now come forth and admit that you’ve been doing it wrong. You were using too little gun.

300 WSM is the new .30-30.
