I’m all for the upcoming wolf hunt but I’m wondering how folks are going to go about hunting them? Will it be with bait, decoys, game sounds or just locations. Anyone know?

I didn’t draw a tag, but my initial plan was to utilize calling. I figure we all have a lot to learn in this arena.

Not sure what’s legal in Mn but Wi does not allow hunters to use bait. I would guess most will call or use dogs when that gets legalized. Deer decoys on frozen lakes and rivers may be an option. Road hunting wouldn’t be a bad idea either. It is legal to hunt at night and use a light at the point of kill. I see plenty on my way to and from hunting after dark… 100% on public land. I believe trapping will be the only way to really reduce population.

not sure if baiting is legal, but if it was an option I was going to save deer legs and the guts for bait

I even think trapping would be tough. These are very smart animals its goimg to be tough I know trapping one is considered a great acomplishment. even the alaskans have a trouble trapping them and those old boys know their stuff. Should be interesting

We plan on calling to locate the pack/s and work them from there. Depends if we shoot a deer. We may try and sit over the gut pile.

Well, you’ve hit on the central question here really. It’s great to have a wolf hunting and trapping season. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be easy to hunt or trap.

Since my license is for the first season that runs alongside deer season, I think my main “plan” is just to be out there. I plan to carry a coaxer call with me just in case I’d spot one that’s out of range.

Beyond that, I plan to do some calling with the eCaller.

Overall, because the seasons are very short and wolves are going to be very hard to hunt, I’m predicting that we won’t get anywhere near the quota with this first season. I also predict the trappers will do far better than the hunters.
