I know there are black Coyotes in Wisconsin but I have never seen one in northern Wisconsin. What do you think it is? It doesn’t really look that big to me. Is it a young wolf?

    Jon:

Not the best angle to determine, but I am going with wolf… I had a dark one on my cams in 2010 baiting bear. Not sure if it was black or dark brown, but it was male as it was caught marking the area once…

vikefanmn77 posted the exact thought that came to mind. However, would really need to see a profile of its head to tell. Regardless, cool looking pelt!

Seeing how my dad has a wolf tag he is pumped either way. The steel will be in the ground soon!

    Coyote is my thought.

Look at the proportion of the length of the front leg, then compare that to the distance from the bottom of the shoulder to the top of the back.

On a wolf, the leg length will be nearer 2x this distance from the bottom to top of shoulder. Wolves have much longer legs.

My vote is for a yound wolf. Either way, he’ll make one heck of a pelt. Good luck!

Given the rarity of black coyotes, I’d have to say young wolf. Let us know when you get it!
