I just went through the list of colleges that I’m paying for application fees to. Top of the list – University of Wyoming in Laramie. Mom said something about “plan C”…I’m thinking Plan A just might have to check in on her from the end of Aug to about January!!!!

That’s great Randy. I sure wish someone would have told me about Montanna back when I was 17.

I’ve been accused of spoiling my girls….but somehow I always seem to find a benefit for myself. Though, I hope these colleges will accept the lint from my pockets….not like the money faucet has been spewing very well over the last couple years

wo wo wo. Did we pay for application fees when we went to college? This seems absurd to me.

its $40 to $85 per school, plus $8.00 per school for her transcripts to be emailed. $100.00 deposit at a UW school if accepted, then just put your blindfold on and open your wallet

Sorry to drag this off topic a bit, but our higher education system has become such a racket in this country. You come out with a debt package the size of most nice homes.

It’s so extremely important we help our kids choose career paths that will lead to a decent job.

The American University system is unsustainable with the cost increases we are seeing. I’m very proud of where I went to school but to put my kids there today (and we are four years off) would run me $160,000 over four years.

Many of the kids I graduated with were pre-seminary or getting teaching degrees. $160K to teach or preach?

Even if the kids come out in the business sector and can start at $40K, with living expenses it will take them the better part of 20 years to pay that off.

Tech trades right now are offering very low cost schooling that you earn money while you learn. Why would someone today want to come out of school $100K in hole when they could have been an electrician, plumber, etc and be miles ahead financially?

It is not that anyone wants to. However most (and I do mean most) career paths including those that used to require a certificate or associates degree are now requiring a bachelors degrees. These are careers that pay 30-50k per year.

And the trades are a boom and bust sector of the economy. Point is….it isn’t looking good for our kids. Between my folks and myself we plan on having about 100k+/kid in the bank for college. At least they won’t have to come out of college with an astronomical student loan bill.

That is so true. My daughter has a gift for working with children and the elderly. She really has a passion for working with children with learning disabilities. I still cringe when I look at how much debt she will have, how much income lost for not working for 4 years, plus all the incidental costs

I have to agree costs are out of site. What really scares me what are they teaching our kids. When the Teacher unions were running rampant in Madison how many college kids were there protesting with the teachers but then turn around and complain school costs are to high…….DUHHHHHHH

As it happens, I have a friend who is a Professor of Astrophysics at U of W in Laramie. Dr. Adam Myers. Nice school and certainly benefitting from the economic boom of the oil and gas industry out there.

I agree with what others have said, kids these days need to look at a university degree as a business proposition and in much more stark terms than we did back when I went. With the cost of college plus the interest that will be added on, it’s not a given that it makes sense to go into debt to enter certain professions like teaching. Making $30k a year or less as a starting salary won’t pay off the loan it took to get there.

Of course, the problem is that many kids either change majors or they graduate and end up doing something other than what their degree was for. I started out training to become a commercial pilot and ended up in marketing management. Never regretted it, although I miss flying. It turned out that I was training at the absolute peak of pilot wages and opportunities and it’s been all downhill since 1990.

Mrs Grouse got an BSc in Geology from a respected Ye Olde University back in England and now she’s a bigwig at an executive recuriting firm. Go figure.

It’s very difficult to predict where life will take you and I wouldn’t want to be a kid now having to make the choice. Of course, life isn’t what you plan, it’s what you do.
