My oldest daughter is taking her Hunters Safety Test this Saturday and I’m very proud of her for doing so. Most of you would think of this as no big deal, but she has many interests and influences in life that don’t lead to the woods and swamps and fields for hunting.
I believe she is doing so just so we can spend some quality time together. She’s a good kid. She’s pictured here in her uniform for one of her main interests.

I was lucky to find a class for her. There are several in St. Croix County but they all run too long. For kids that are involved in sports and other activities, a 6 week class meeting twice a week does not work.

I spoke with a regional DNR rep and they recently have been telling their instructors to make more classes available that have less demanding schedules. Not shorter as the importance of full training here is paramount, but classes on weekends instead of weeknights as an example.

Anyway, I’m proud of my daughter for doing this and really looking forward to the weekend. 3 hour class tonight and 6 hours of field test on Saturday.

Sounds like a fun and rewarding time.

I agree it certainly has become a lot for the kids. The long class length is also starting to effect the number of instructors that can or will commit. Hopefully there will be a solution.

Here are some photos from today. And yes I am also one proud dad. She did great.

Here’s the story. As she sat down to shoot the .22, her first of three stations, I could tell she was nervous. She had never fired a gun over a BB gun. She waited until one of the other girls shot and then felt, hey that wasn’t so bad. By her third shot, she actually hit her target (used bowling pin) and then proceeded to hit several more shots.

Her second rotation was the bow range and she really poured herself into it, asking questions on aiming point, and eventually did quite well on both the target and 3D doe target.
Then her final station, this is where the wow came in. She gets up to shoot a shotgun, chooses the small .410 first and nails the clay pigeon first shot. Moves to the 20 gauge and hits her next three birds before missing her fifth and final shot. She looks at the instructor and says, I can’t end on a bad one. He gives her another shot and she connects, 5 out of 6 clay pigeons, one with a .410.

My dog is going to be happy to have someone in the family who can shoot.

Hats off to Larry Guthrie and his crew of volunteers in Pigeon Falls. I could not have imagined a better setup for a class for us. Great instructors, great people, beautiful setting. We type here alot of what we feel is wrong with the DNR, but I’m here to tell you that Larry and his group are all about what is right with the WDNR.

Then we had to get home quickly so she could go to the MOA with her friends to go dress shopping.

Awesome! I think you are gonna have to keep plenty of guns around the house to keep those boys at bay.
