Biometric Safe

The crime rate has recently spiked in our neighborhood. It’s been all theft from cars up until last weekend. The thieves got bold and broke into a neighbor’s garage and stole a bunch of stuff, while she was home. Her husband is deployed in Afghanastan right now and I guess she is pretty shook.

Anyway, my wife and I are stepping our home security. One is going to getting both of us certified to carry in Mn. My wife is very concerned about the safety of the kids with pistols in the house. So, we are looking for a biometric safe that only her and I can open.

    Anyone have any good recommendations?

Good idea… I heard some dude was in your garage a couple weeks ago when you weren’t home… Thank your dad for me for the ramps… much easier ride now into the back of the RAM

LOL, he may look intimidating, but he’s a lover (unless you’re one of the neighbor’s cats!).

Kooty, have you found any good info and/or made a decision yet?

I haven’t had time to dig into this yet. I’m gonna start this week. To me, this is as important as anything I’ll ever put in my house. I want my wife to feel safe when I’m gone and also know there is NO way the kids could ever get to the pistol.

We have also started talking about how to handle different situations should they arise in the house, garage break in vs. basement etc… I honestly never thought I’d be having these conversations, but hopefully we are prepared if we ever need to use deadly force in our home.

Here are the two I’m considering:

    GunVault

    and

    Barska

Both seem to have about the same reviews. Mostly positive, definitely some negative out there also. Apparently there is a myth buster out there about how you can copy finger prints and get into these boxes. Well, for my purpose, the kids likely won’t be that smart for a while and if/when they get to that point, I hope I have trained them well enough to not be playing with guns.

I’m only ever tried the GunVault style with out the print reader. Do keep in mind though that you want to make sure you can get in there if you need to in an emergency. Because a lot of these electronic safes have a reset time if you screw up trying to open it in a hurry. Then you have to wait X amount of time before you can try again. Which isn’t good when someone is tring to get in your house or already in. Plan old combination safe is nice for that and just never tell the kids or let them watch when you dial it open.
