    Heard a disscussion the other day that got me thinking. Here’s the scenario.

    You live in an area that the longest range type shot you can take is 50 yards. You have a new .308 that you want to zero in for 150 yards for hunting.

    At 50 yards how high above the center of the bullseye would you have to be to hit dead center at 150?

    If your rifle is zeroed in at 150 yards you will probably be 1-1.5″ high at 50 yards. My .270 is zeroed at 200 and anything inside that I usually hold right on them. Shot a doe at 40 yards and the bullet was right in the kill zone without aiming low at all

    you can look into this @ Hornady.com web site ballistic info pages,, or whatever manufacturer’s ammo your using.
    You need to know the weigh & type of you bullet, and how many feet per second (FPS)Muzzle Velocity it is. Then look it up on the charts and it will lay it all out for you…

    That’s a loaded question There are some other factors that also need to be considered. Which scope, which mounts, what is your mount height…..BARREL LENGTH???

    If I calculated this correctly with a Howa .308 in a 22″ barrel with burris XTR medium mounts, the bullet is still below the line of sight by .480 at 25 yards and will pass at “First Zero” at 41 yards. At 50 yrds, the point of impact should be .205″ above the line of sight. Your maximum rise will occur at about 95 yrds with a .735″ above line of sight. Then zeroed at 150yrds as you requested.

    BC= .435
    Muzzle = 2880
    Altitude 920′
    Humidity = 70%

    BTW – That is a very flat trajectory, less than 3/4″ over 125 yrds compared to line of sight. After looking at that, I can see exactly why you want the 150 yrd zero in lieu of a typical 200 or 250.
