Do any of you guys have any tips, tricks, etc. for preventing chiggers from getting on ya? Everytime I go down to my farm in Missouri in the summer, I come home with chigger bites. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can only speak to the ones in water. If swimming in suspected water towel dry off vigoursly when exciting the water. Includes changing to dry clother right away.

I bite em first… I also can speak to the water born buggers. As kids, growing up on the lake, we got em every year. Mom always soaked us in Baking Soda baths, seemed to dry em up pretty well Good luck on your trip south

There’s chiggers that don’t live in the water?

Although a lot of people use the term chigger for the water-borne pest, chiggers are land-based mites. The crap you get from the water is known as swimmer’s itch. It comes from a water-borne parasite.

I’ve never had either, but I can remember my sister getting some horrendous cases of swimmer’s itch when we were young. It looked miserable!

Not a prevention but it helps once you’ve been bitten to cover up chigger bites (not swimmers itch) with clear nail polish…works great. I’ve never had a chigger bite here in Wisconsin but when I lived in Nebraska, it was horrible!

I heard that swimmers itch (chiggers) comes from duck poo in the water… I also heard the nail polish trick yesterday !!

Yeah, I believe it passes through the intestinal tract of waterfowl. It also passes through snails.
