Another Trail Camera Question

A little help guys. Dad wants a trail camera for Father’s Day. There is a decent deer in the area that he wants to try and catch on film as well as a bear that left a pile of poop we mistook at first for horse poop. So as you know, it’s a big bear.

Anyway I know trigger speed is important when placing a camera on a trail where the game may not stop as it walks by.

I’m not afraid to drop $$ on a quality unit.

What are you guys finding out there in the units you’ve used and compared to others? I have some buddies who have cheaper ($100) units and I get the impression that they are just that. Functional at best. You get what you pay for.

In my opinion Reconyx are the best but they are very spendy. At half the price you can get a Covert. Which is still a very good camera. If you want a color picture 24/7 then go with a Cudde. If you want trigger speed and very good battery life go with the Reconyx. I am serious they don’t miss!!! The covert is excellent on batteries, but a little slow on the trigger. The Cudde is good on trigger and takes excellent pictures all the time but kind of hard on batteries.

There are now quite a few good cameras on the market. I use several brands, One that has worked well for me is the Scout guard sg550. Great battery life and no flash. U-way makes the scout Guard, Bushnell, covert and probably a few more that I forgot to mention.

if money is no object Reconyx hands down. i upgraded my cameras this year too the coverts Hr8.0 (2 of them) and three scoutguards. love the lcd screen on the coverts, sure makes it handy viewing pics in the field if you want too and they are 1/3 the price of the reconyx. im more than happy with the triger speed 1.2 sec compared with the prob 3 seconds my old cameras were. but absolutely nothing on the market can touch the reconyx. they dont have a video mode for a reason, they snap 2 pics per second. annd the trigger speed is 1/5th of a sec. if something moves it will get caught. another thing you may want to look at is the home brew camera, i bought one from a friend and they take amazing pictures, the quality of the picture cant be matched by ANY commercial trail cam, and some of them even have sound on the video mode, this option is pretty neat. PM me if your interested and i could probably get you in touch with the guy that makes them, hes really awesome at it. the only thing the reconyx has on the home brew is the trigger speed.

Thanks for your help guys. I ordered dad the Reconyx HC500 HyperFireâ„¢. I’ll post some pics as soon as we get them.
