Looking for some expert help from you guys.

I would like to get a trail cam, not so much for hunting reasons, but for all the other aminals that come through our yard.

Since we’ve lived in our house for around 20 years, we’ve seen fox, yote, turkeys, deer and there was a report of a bear streaking through our neighborhood a couple years ago.

Are there ever any used cam on the market?

    I’m not interested in video…I don’t think.

Color would be nice, but not really a nessesity I wouldn’t think.

What else should I be looking for, or maybe I should ask…what should I stay a way from?

I’m pretty sure you can find refurbished units out there if you didn’t want to buy new. Used ones might be a gamble unless you know who you are buying from. Spend the extra $$ and get new in case you have to return it. Trigger speed might be something to consider as well.

As far as not wanting video..trust me, these things are addicting. You’ll want video at some point! And you’re going to want more than just one….even though your FW might disagree! I would say take a look at amazon.com as they have some really good deals at times on trail cameras!

Trigger speed is how fast the camera triggers once it detects movement Example . .

    – Trigger speed 1.2sec

Trigger speed…how fast the camera takes the picture of the object!

    Just because I’m a cat guy…

I’ll ask the question better…what is a good trigger speed and what should I stay away from?

I am guessing in your yard you will have some sort of feed/attractant out so trigger speed isn’t a concern as they will stop and spend some time there

For what you’re using it for that would be good although I’m not familiar with Tasco. They should have “Reviews” you can read about them on Amazon!

if your going to be putting it on some sort of food like a bird feeder or a corn pile you really cant beat the price of the moultrie 5.0. They dont have a fast enough trigger speed to put on a trail and catch a deer walking/running past but if you have a spot that they will be stopping to feed it will work perfect for that situation. If you want to try one out, let me know you can try out mine, i wont have it out for a while.

Thanks guys and especially you HookNfinger!

From the sounds of it, there really isn’t a reason to buy one brand over another except for the “trigger time” and even at that, my feeding spot cam wouldn’t need a very fast one.

    Amazon here I come!

I have one of those too Steve and it works pretty good…only issues with it is that it doesn’t work well in cold weather conditions and it’s a heavy bugger!

Yep you are right about the cold and yes they are heavy but that does not bother me too much. I have one of those and 4 of the older ones I think they are 4.0, I also like the turning knob on the old one verse the sliding knob on the new one if you know what I mean. BK don’t even go there.

Mike what cam would you recomend that works good in cold weather?

I don’t have one but from What Pat has been reporting, the Covert cameras seem to run very well in cold weather and the battery life is unreal! Pat can talk about that better than I can. I have a couple of Moultrie cameras, a Bushnell and a Wildgame Innovation and they seem to have battery life for about 3 months….depending on the temp of course!

I haven’t had my Covert out in the cold yet But I believe it will be the best I have owned so far

Cold is hard on all equipment and battery life suffers the most

What kind and how many batteries do this things take?

Are they all run off of SD cards?

Since it’s going to be within range of my WI-FI network, wouldn’t that be nice to be able to down load wirelessly?

HAH! I’m thinking about a $40 cam and wireless download at the same time.

Most take D or AA batteries

    All run of SD cards

If you can walk out the door to it you don’t need wireless download that’s just being lazy

I would get a camera with flash as most of your pictures will probably be at night

Hey! It’s 2011! Maybe I can get the FW to bring it in for me.

    Flash for sure. Thanks!

The reason behind this post is that last night my motion detector light was on, but no deer and I’m too lazy to sit up for a half hour waiting for them to come back.

Jez you guys like to show your butts a lot!
