Went out shed hunting yesterday and was walking a deer trail on a side hill just above a logging road. I came upon some large tail feathers from a turkey. I thought that was odd but as I looked more in the area it was evident that a turkey was ambushed! There were more feathers scattered amongst the hillside. I then noticed something on the logging road below. It was what was left of a tom….and not much of that either. I walked up to the carcass and noticed the spurs. DARN coyotes took down an old tom. There wasn’t much left of this bird. All the meat was cleaned right off the bones. Never found the head or the beard either.

I showed these photos to the guy that lives near this area. He is a big time coyote hunter. He told me that coyotes rarely catch and kill hens because they will fly to get away…where toms most of the time try to out run the foe. NOT GOOD!

Regardless if I’m deer hunting or turkey hunting, EVERY coyote that comes in range gets killed. I don’t think people realize how destructive they can be on turkeys and fawns.

Even if it means screwing up a setup for a day, I’ll shoot every coyote I see this Spring.

Hey Zimmy that is a bummer! Although we do hate to see turkeys and fawns killed by yotes, it is natures way! Maybe this tom was sick and weak and the coyotes ended up with an easy meal? One never knows…the good news is that there are hopefully plenty more birds to choose from!

That’s how I tend to look at it, too.
