anyone ever build a wood burning fireplace?

just wondering if anyone has ever built a wood burning fireplace for their home or shop. im going to get some steel and build 2 of them myself but cant find any real good plans to go off of. if any of you have built one i would sure love to hear anything you did that you like or dislike or even might change if you built another. The first thing I thought of is how an insurance company would react to a fire loss claim that involved a homemade woodburner. I would anticipate issues with that…..

yes i hear you with that for sure. i will be checking with them as well. if i cant put it in the house it will go right outside and i will add pipes in it and run them into the house into a heat exchange in the plenum of my furnace. it will still use electricity but when your spending close to 3000$ a winter for LP its time to do something. woods cheap.

My parents had homemade wood burning stoves 1 at the cabin 1 at home. They both had to be removed. Insurance will not insure any non UL listed wood burning device. My in-laws built an outdoor one with a water jacket piped into house etc. It worked great saved money. I helped him cut it up after he found out he couldn’t insure his home due to it not being a UL listed burner. Don’t buy a plate steel till you get all the facts on insurance. He almost wept as I fired up the cutting torch. It was a lot of time and effort building one with a water jacket from scratch.
